Gross or Genius: Scrambled Eggs, Cottage Cheese & Mustard

High protein is the name of the game right now on TikTok—with everything from high-protein ice cream to high-protein cookie dough taking over our FYP, people are determined to get the highest number of grams into their bodies in the most delicious ways possible.

TikToker and weight-loss influencer Tiffany Magee's videos went viral recently, most notably for her eggs, cottage cheese and mustard breakfast, which has reached over 3 million views so far—ours included. Commenters are both delighted and disgusted. Some folks are raving in the comments that eggs and mustard are the very bet pair, while others aren't convinced. "Nah I’m calling the cops for this one 😭," said one person. All of this chatter (and all of those views) got us intrigued, so we had to try it out for ourselves to see if it was worth the hype—or just plain weird. Here's what happened.

What's the scrambled eggs, cottage cheese & mustard breakfast on TikTok?

Magee shows just how easy a filling high-protein breakfast can be when she combined scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and mustard in what she says takes about 90 seconds. It’s a simple breakfast idea or snack that contains a whopping 26 grams of protein, so we can see why people are intrigued. It's also easy, cheesy and an unexpected combination, which only adds to the intrigue. One TikToker felt validated by the trend, saying "I have eaten eggs with mustard my whole life. Adding the cottage cheese is everything!!"

How to make scrambled eggs, cottage cheese and mustard

Start by spraying cooking spray into a frying pan, adding your eggs, and and scrambling them until just set. When the eggs are just about done, add in a dollop of cottage cheese (I used just under 1/2 cup) and stir together until the cottage cheese is slightly warmed. After plating, give the whole bowl a couple of good squirts of mustard. I used Dijon, but some of the TikToks use plain yellow mustard. Top with your preferred herbs and seasonings. I used chives and it was perfect.

What does this TikTok breakfast taste like?

Like most critics on TikTok, I was thoroughly prepared to be 100% disgusted by this combination, but this protein-packed breakfast was warm, eggy and nourishing with a sharp punch from the mustard and an herbaceous quality from my chopped chives. One TikToker wrote "I tried it and I was skeptical about heating up the cottage cheese BUT IT WAS SOOO GOOD. Not even lying!!" I feel the same way.

Although I didn’t use yellow mustard, it still worked. I scrambled my eggs just lightly enough so that when I added the cottage cheese, it melted into pillowy, luscious curds. I added some chopped chives for some extra flavor, but thyme or oregano would work really well here too. It’s sort of like eating a deconstructed deviled egg in a bowl.

Magee is heavy-handed with the mustard, so I added a lot too, but if I were to make this again, I would add a little bit less. If I wanted something super high-protein to eat that was extremely filling I’d probably make this again, but I’m not quite sure I would make it my go-to breakfast. Try it and decide for yourself!

Tips for making the cottage cheese, mustard and egg breakfast

  • Go easy on the salt. I didn’t add any salt since the cottage cheese was salty enough, plus the tanginess of the mustard added even more flavor so if you’re going to try this one, I would go light with the salt.

  • Try using the microwave. I’m not above making eggs in the microwave, so an easy hack that's not mentioned in the original recipe would be to spray a coffee mug with some cooking spray and nuke your eggs for a couple of minutes before adding a hefty dollop of cottage cheese and a squirt or two of mustard. Bonus points for this breakfast fitting in your cupholder, so you can eat it on the go.

  • Blend your cottage cheese. One TikToker offers up this genius tip for those who don't like the texture of cottage cheese: "If people don’t like the texture of cottage cheese they can blend it and cook it with the eggs."

  • Put it on toast. I'd love to try the eggs on a nice slice of sourdough toast. That kind of negates the purpose of it being low-carb, but I think it would be delicious, which is usually my priority when it comes to eating.
