Grimes just got "alien scars" added to her body

Grimes is no stranger to body modifications, and the singer took to Instagram this week to reveal yet more "alien scars".

Sharing a photo with her fans, Grimes showed off the tattoo across her chest, which uses white ink to give the effect of scarification – a form of body modification that involves purposefully cutting into the skin to create scars in specific designs, patterns or markings.

Scarification has been around for centuries, but experts have warned about the risks of the body modification technique, which can include keloid scars and infections, resulting in inconsistent results. In the UK, the law surrounding scarification is a bit of a "grey area" according to experts, much like tongue-splitting.

With all this in mind, perhaps that's why Grimes has opted for white tattoo ink rather than scarification, and fans will remember that a few years ago the Genesis singer adorned her back with similar "alien scars".

"Full back in white ink by @tweakt w sum help from the alien computer brain of @nusi_quero," she wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the sprawling tattoo. "Don’t have a good pic cuz it hurts too much and I need to sleep haha, and it’ll be red for a few wks, but gna be beautiful alien scars."

But, there's been a mixed response from fans about the body modifications. "That’s pretty cool," one fan wrote after Grimes shared a snap of her most recent tattoo, as someone else described the look as "beyond stunning." Elsewhere in the comments section, another person said: "That’s so weird."

To each their own!
