Grieving TikToker is shocked when Chewy honors her beta fish with special gift: ‘The coolest thing a company has ever sent me’
Animal enthusiast and rescuer Thala Hash (@spidergwenin) recently tagged the pet company Chewy in a TikTok that is warming pet lovers’ hearts.
Hash shared how Chewy sent her a typed card for her birthday and a hand-painted portrait of her beloved beta fish, Echo, who recently passed. Mementos from pets who have passed are priceless for many pet owners, and surprise pictures can become treasured possessions.
The card read: “Happy National Aquarium Month! We’re basically obSEAsessed with Echo and wanted to take this opportunity to surprise you with a portrait. Best fishes, your Chewy family.”
She clarified that the post was not sponsored (although it “should be,” she added) but that the gesture was the “coolest” thing a company has ever sent her.
The thoughtful gesture from Chewy meant even more to Hash because she explained that she often rescues very small animals with health issues and short life spans.
She also added that in the past few years alone, she lost several rescued pets, including bearded dragons, hamsters, mice, ferrets, and parakeets.
In the comment section, many others shared that they also received heartfelt gifts from the Chewy company, especially after their pets passed away.
“Chewy is the best, they sent me a condolence card when my cat passed away,” noted @tny_kaiju.
“Chewy sent me flowers when my cat passed away. It made me cry,” added @treatsntrinkets.
“I got one for my turtle and I just about cried,” said @lcaswell1.
Other pet owners took to Twitter to share the gifts and gestures they’d received from Chewy.
I contacted @Chewy last week to see if I could return an unopened bag of my dog’s food after he died. They 1) gave me a full refund, 2) told me to donate the food to the shelter, and 3) had flowers delivered today with the gift note signed by the person I talked to?? 😭🥹

From the many people who have received gifts from Chewy, it appears they rely on customers’ pet profiles on their accounts, and if you remove a pet or profile, the company may send you something.
You can also reach out directly to Chewy to let them know and request a portrait.
But if you haven’t received a hand-painted pet portrait from Chewy before, it also looks like you can order some personalized pet art directly from their website.
They offer wrapped gallery art, wood prints and even a key and leash holder that you can customize with portraits of your favorite pets.
