Grey's Anatomy fans will probably agree that season 19 brought about many twists and turns.

The latest installment of the ABC medical drama introduced new interns who walked the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital alongside longtime staffers. But perhaps the biggest surprise of all came from Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo), who announced in the fall finale that she would be leaving Seattle with her family for a research position in Boston. What's more, this all came after losing the home she built with her late husband Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and her daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs) developing severe anxiety.

Needless to say, there have been a lot of changes, and we still have a ways to go before saying goodbye to Meredith on the February 23 midseason premiere. But with all of the switch-ups occurring on the longtime TV show, it's making folks wonder how much longer it will be on the air. Or, if we want to be frank, does this shift mean season 19 of Grey's Anatomy will be the last? We did some research to answer this question, and the result may be a bit surprising.

Will season 19 of Grey's Anatomy be the last?

When Simran Sethi, the Executive Vice President, Content and Strategy for ABC Entertainment was asked by Deadline about the future of the Shonda Rhimes-created series, she had some thoughts about it. According to her, it seems highly probable that the drama will continue on for as long as viewers are tuning in.

"No decisions have been made at this time, but we hope to be in business with Shondaland for a really long time," she told the outlet in October.

This answer came around the same time Shonda fielded questions about Grey's Anatomy's potential end after almost two decades. As she told People, she doesn't see the ABC show ending — despite having written multiple finales in the past.

"I've had 15 different endings for this show, and the show just keeps going," she said to the magazine. "So anything that I had ever planned is no longer even mildly relevant ... I think maybe eight seasons ago I stopped thinking about it. There's nothing that's changed because there was nothing there to change."

Well, that looks like a pretty solid answer to us! But it does bring up more questions about who will stay on. Though Ellen's final episode is coming up, she cleared up that she's not leaving the Grey's universe entirely. For now, she'll still be credited as an executive producer and will narrate the rest of season 19.

Although the actress' departure has upset many fans, she didn't seem too worried about the conclusion of Grey's Anatomy. "[Grey’s is] still gonna be just fine without me — I’m still gonna do the voiceover ... And I’ll be back at Grey’s for the finale, and we’ll see if we can keep it going," she revealed in September to Deadline.

Ellen continued: "I’m gonna always be a part of that show — I’m an [executive] producer on that show, I’ve spent two decades of my career on that show, it’s my heart and soul, and I’ll never truly be gone as long as that show’s on the air."

So, there you have it. The world of Grey's Anatomy will still be around ... for now.
