'Grey’s Anatomy' Fans on Twitter Figured Out How Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Will Leave

Grey's Anatomy is full steam ahead in season 19, and the show already has been throwing major twists. While fans continue to have theories on family connections and who's making their return to Grey Sloan, they're equally dreading the day when Meredith Grey makes her exit after close to two decades on the air.

By now viewers know Meredith's tenure this season will only span eight episodes, as actress Ellen Pompeo will be working on an upcoming limited series for Hulu. While it's been reported she will continue to appear via voiceovers, it's also led folks to wonder exactly how she will transition out for the moment.

Thanks to some theories on Twitter, there may be an idea of exactly what — or in this case, who — will cause Meredith to leave her position at the hospital. During Thursday night's episode, Grey's Anatomy fans got to see a new side of Meredith's daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs).

While hanging out at Grey Sloan post-panic attack in the previous episode, doctors and interns learned of her brilliance after her taking a series of neurological tests. With this in mind, fans on social media began thinking that Zola's newfound results could be the catalyst to her exiting this season. Or, more importantly, they have thoughts on what Meredith should do with the results.

"Zola is gifted 😍😍😍 guessing this may be how they exit Meredith. Move to put Zola in a better school," one fan theorized on Twitter. "I see how Mer is leaving she is going to move to leave because the school Zola needs is out of town," another viewer commented. "No surprise there. Zola is a genius or something," a different fan added.

While Meredith wasn't too thrilled about Zola taking them without her permission, it did lead the titular character to reconsider the way she's been raising her adopted daughter.

"I'm lost with Zola right now," she told Nick (Scott Speedman) in one scene. "And it just doesn't help that all the people I love go behind my back and break all the rules."

So, there could be some validity to this theory. Currently, there aren't any concrete details as to when or even why Meredith will be taking a leave of absence from Grey Sloan. But couple this with the fact that many fan favorites are making their return (like Kate Walsh and Jesse Williams), it's clear that something is brewing that will change the trajectory of season 19 ...
