'Grey’s Anatomy' Fans, This Reddit Theory Might’ve Uncovered Who Lucas Adams' Mom Is

Grey's Anatomy fans. we're back at the operating table once again. Season 19 of the longtime ABC medical drama is underway, and we're busy trying to figure out the mystery behind new intern Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) being related to the Shepherd family.
In the latest season premiere, viewers learned that Lucas' aunt and uncle are none other than Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). He actually was the latter's favorite nephew, according to a conversation Amelia had with Lucas' aunt, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). While the family connection is openly spoken about, Grey's Anatomy fans seem to want to know more about his ties to the Shepherds. Or more importantly, exactly how he is related to them.
Well, thanks to a few sleuthing minds on Reddit, we may just know which of Amelia and Derek's siblings is Lucas' mother.
Before we dive into this, let's take a look at the Shepherd family itself. As we learned in the second episode of the series, Derek grew up with four sisters — Nancy (Embeth Davidtz), Kathleen (Amy Acker), Liz (Neve Campbell) and Amelia — who have "tons of kids." We already know Amelia isn't Lucas' mom, based on the show's prior history and the fact she's the one who revealed the big secret about his relatives. That leaves room for the other three women to step forward and fill the role.
Several theories surfaced when a Reddit user posed the question, "Who do you think Lucas's mom will turn out to be?" While one follower wrote that "any of the sisters" could be in the running, one woman stood out amongst the others.
"If I had to choose based off evidence I'd pick Nancy," user SnooPeppers3470 replied in the thread. "In season 15 Nancy says John (husband) took the kids on vacation (Florida?) which would be weird considering he would be in med school by then unless we just meant non adult aged kids." A different Reddit user agreed as well, writing, "I hope it's Liz but I think it's Nancy ... Nancy is the eldest so a son in his late 20s seems more logical."
If we dive into Nancy's history on Grey's Anatomy, the theory may just check out. According to the hit medical drama, she's a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology living with her family in Connecticut. In the two appearances she's made (season 3 and season 15), Nancy is either openly berating Derek's relationship with Meredith (and her disdain for the then-intern) or planning an ill-fated dinner between Amelia and Kathleen.
With that in mind, it would make sense how she might be hard on her kids to follow in her footsteps in medicine. Plus, the show did describe Lucas' character as one "determined to prove himself as a surgeon, just like many in his family that have come before him." Coupled with what we know about Nancy, she might be the mystery parent fans want to hear more about.
Luckily, there may be a chance to find out more about Lucas' background sooner than expected. The promo for the third episode of season 19 sees Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) making a grand return to Grey Sloan, and we can't forget how she used to be married to Derek before he got together with Meredith. Maybe she's carrying the insight we're all looking for ...
Until then, we'll just have our speculations and see how Lucas fares next Thursday night.
