'Grey’s Anatomy' Fans Flipped Out on Twitter Over Cristina’s Season 17 Finale Texts

The season 17 finale of Grey’s Anatomy didn’t disappoint thanks to an unexpected text message from Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) at the end of the episode.

On Thursday night's episode, the ABC medical drama transported viewers from August 2020 to April 2021, beginning with Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo)'s first day as residency director. In the late summer, an assisted-living nurse named Gerlie (Aina Dumlao) was admitted after contracting COVID-19. A month later while being discharged, Gerlie collapsed and was readmitted.

Fast forward to January 2021 and we see Meredith make it her personal mission to advocate for Gerlie to receive a double lung transplant — a risky but necessary surgery due to the character's post-COVID complications. Finally, Meredith received the text she’d be waiting for — a lung donor had been found for Gerlie. This marked the first time Meredith scrubbed in for surgery since recovering from COVID-19 herself.

While sitting by Gerlie’s side after surgery, Meredith was seen texting none other than Cristina, who was about to perform the same surgery on her own patient. “My patient is stable,” Meredith wrote. “Donor lungs available, booking the O.R. for tonight,” Cristina replied. “Don’t forget who did it first,” Meredith said. Cristina replied with laughing and celebratory face emojis.

Unsurprisingly, Grey’s fans watching from home caught the moment and loved that the former Grey Sloan Memorial doctor was still present in Meredith's life.

“MEREDITH TEXTING CRISTINA! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭,” one person wrote on Twitter. “This small Cristina convo (text) thing made me happy haha. My #MerTina heart is still alive. Thank you @GreysABC,” a different fan said. “Ok at least we got a Cristina text appearance I’m happy,” another added. “I love that #GreysAnatomy brings Cristina back through text 😂 BEST PART OF THE SHOW!” a follower commented.

Meanwhile, others were hoping that Cristina would make a surprise in-person appearance last night, similar to how other characters such as Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and April Kepner (Sarah Drew) popped up in season 17. “The way they shot that last scene, I thought Cristina was going to be shown. Omfg. My heart stopped,” someone tweeted.

Since Sandra Oh departed the show in 2013, fans have been calling for her character to return. Even still, it doesn’t sounds like Sandra is planning on a comeback anytime soon. When speaking on The Los Angeles Times podcast "Asian Enough," Sandra responded "no" when asked if she had considered a return to Grey's.

"It’s very rare, I would say, to be able to see in such a way the impact of a character," Sandra explained. "In some ways, you do your work as a bubble and you let it go. I left that show, my God, seven years ago almost. So in my mind, it’s gone. But for a lot of people, it’s still very much alive. And while I understand and I love it, I have moved on."

Though we may never see Cristina back on the show, it's safe to say fans would love to see more text messages in season 18.
