Laura Dern is iconic. The beloved Big Little Lies actress has spent the past four decades entertaining audiences, particularly in independent films. At last night’s Gotham Awards, that work was honored with a special tribute. Directors Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach took the stage to praise Dern’s talents, but even before their speech began, the couple paid homage to one of Dern’s most memorable roles. In coordinated sweaters from Raf Simons’ Fall 2019 collection featuring images of Dern’s character Sandy Williams from David Lynch’s 1986’s suburban noir, Blue Velvet and 1990's crime-romance Wild at Heart, Gerwig and Baumbach referenced early examples of Dern’s acting’s skill and one of the most important collaborations of her career.

Dern, who wore a standout look from Fendi's Fall 2019 couture show has starred in three of Lynch’s 10 films as well as the revival of his series Twin Peaks, is often cited as the director’s muse, but he’s not the only one she has inspired. When seeking out references for his collection, Simons focused on Lynch’s oeuvre, particularly Dern’s roles in Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart. Images from both movies were turned into the oversized patches that adorned trench coats and sweaters. The actress, who sat in the front row during the collection’s debut back in January, even helped the designer with the licensing process that made the pieces possible.

For Gerwig and Baumbach, who worked with Dern this year on Little Women and Marriage Story, respectively, taking the stage in sweaters with Dern’s image was just one way of showing their appreciation—it just happened to be incredibly chic.
