Great White Shark Attack Victim Loses Leg, Family Rallies for Support (Video)

On Friday, August 25th, 44-year-old Toby Begg was surfing in New South Wales, Australia when he was attacked by a four-meter-long great white shark.

The attack happened at Lighthouse Beach, Port Macquarie, on the mid north coast. Begg sustained serious injuries, as he was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he arrived in critical condition and, reportedly, lost his leg.

Now, he's gone from “critical” to “stable”; but he’s got a long road to recovery.

In a GoFundMe account set up by Begg’s family to help with the medical costs, they write:

“Hi, my brother-in-law, Toby Begg was the victim of a 4m great white shark attack on 25 August 2023 at Lighthouse Beach, Port Macquarie, Australia. Thankfully an off-duty emergency doctor was on scene to assist him however, his injuries are extremely serious and life changing.

“Toby is my sister Tracy's loving partner and they have two beautiful children. He is a skilled builder, runs a business and is the family bread winner. It is very early stages and the full extent of his injuries are being uncovered however, he will require many surgeries and has years of rehabilitation ahead of him.

“If you can, please donate to assist Toby with medical bills and help with ongoing bills during his recovery.”

So far, the crowdfunding effort has secured $30k AUD of the $50k goal.

What’s more, a photo has emerged which shows the scene moments before the attack.

“You can barely see it,” reports 9 News Australia.

“But just below the surface, where the water is disturbed, a four-meter great white shark is moments from striking.

“Its target: meters away, holding onto his blue surfboard, Toby Begg, doesn’t know it, but his life is about to change.”
