As if this year hasn't been devastating enough, now one of our favorite Halloween TV specials has been taken off air. After 54 consecutive years, It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown will not be shown on television this year.
The title, which has aired on TV every October since its release, has been exclusively moved to Apple TV+.
Now, if you're already an Apple TV+ subscriber, you can stream the classic right now. However, if you're not a subscriber, there is some good news. Although Apple TV+ is a paid subscription service, the platform will be allowing non-members the chance to stream the Halloween classic for free between October 30 through November 1. While this might not be the most ideal way to catch the short, it does at least allow you to watch it on your own schedule, as opposed to one set broadcast time.
As a refresher, the animated classic first aired in 1966 on CBS. In 2001, ABC acquired the rights to the title, where it has been shown ever since. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown follows Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, and the rest of the crew as they get ready for Halloween. It's in this special that Charlie Brown says his iconic line, "I got a rock," as he goes trick-or-treating with his friends and receives a rock at each house, while his friends are given candy, gum, apples, and more. Meanwhile Linus has camped out in the pumpkin patch awaiting a visit from what he refers to as the "Great Pumpkin."
Besides owning the rights to the It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, Apple TV+ seems to be creating quite a collection of Peanuts content. In 2019, the platform released the original series Snoopy in Space. Furthermore, a new original series titled The Snoopy Show will be dropping on Apple TV+ in 2021. It makes us wonder if some of the other Charlie Brown holiday specials will also make the move to the platform. And if so, will they also be available to stream for free?
