Great Outfits in Fashion History: Anitta Does Prom-Chic in a Galia Lahav Gown

There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In 'Great Outfits in Fashion History,' Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.

Before she was a Best New Artist nominee at the Grammys and occupied the top spot on the global charts, Anitta was only a household name in Brazil — maybe in some other parts of Latin America. However, this look from the 2019 Univision Premio Lo Nuestro screams I am the moment. She knew.

Since then, of course, Anitta has given us dozens of dazzling fashion looks that were undoubtedly the moment, but today, I want to focus on her pre-big-time-fame serve. Because that night, the Brazilian diva (who was nominated in four categories) performed a salsa rendition of her hit "Veneno." Although she went home empty-handed, she delivered award-winning style on the red carpet in a custom Galia Lahav gown.

She accessorized with mesh gloves, Versace heels and Tiffany & Co. earrings to round out the dramatic-luxe look that few can convincingly carry. Galia Lahav, mind you, was the brand behind Beyoncé’s vow-renewal dress the very same year, so I see exactly what vision the "Envolver" singer had in mind. (The decadent black tulle gown with its matching gloves is strangely reminiscent of the bougie prom dresses I grew up seeing on my Instagram Explore page — except this prom was a red carpet event in Miami honoring the biggest names in Latin music.)

For glam, Anitta kept things fun: Rather than going the expected route (a smokey eye, say, or maybe a dark lip), she chose a more playful palette for her makeup, with bright-pink eyeshadow framing her eyes and a soft, bubblegum-esque color on her lip. Her hair, meanwhile, was kept relatively simple, in a low bun with some strands framing her face.
