Just weeks after the new season of The Great British Baking Show premiered, the cooking competition has found itself in hot water for its "Mexican Week" episode. Competitors were tasked with putting their own twist on sweet bread pan dulce, Mexican street food, and tres leches cake.

According to People, the opening of the episode began with an interesting exchange between hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas, who were clad in sombreros and serapes. "I don't feel like we should make Mexico jokes. People will get upset," Fielding said. "What?" Lucas replied. "No Mexico jokes at all? Not even Juan?"

Across social media, viewers of the show expressed their disappointment with the episode and its lack of cultural responsibility. The official Instagram account for the baking competition has been inundated with comments from people who are upset with the stereotypes depicted.

"Completely misinforming the world about actual Mexican cuisine as well as so casually and feels enacting racist stereotypes. Unsurprising and always disappointing British behavior," one user commented.

On Twitter the criticism continued, with one user pointing out the "casual racism" displayed during the episode.

"As a Brit, I can tell you that The Great British Bake Off's Mexican Week episode is pretty much a perfect masterclass for the uninitiated on the very specific kind of casual racism that is British casual racism," @ProbablyRealJB wrote in a tweet that has received close to 6,000 likes.

A number of people were also confused by the fact that The Great British Baking Show chose to even air a "Mexican Week" episode given the backlash that 2020's "Japanese Week" received.

The Great British Baking Show has not yet officially responded to fans' criticism.
