Great Britain’s Tom Daley Crocheted a Pouch for His Olympic Gold Medal

British diver Tom Daley has figured out an innovative way to keep his Olympic gold medal safe – and he has made it himself.

Tom and diving partner Matty Lee scored the top prize for Team GB after achieving a near-perfect performance at the men's 10-meter synchronized platform diving finals, which took place on July 26. The victory was long-coveted for the British diver, who made his debut at the games 13 years ago in Beijing. And mow, he has revealed that, overnight in Tokyo, he took the chance to knit a small pouch to prevent the prized award from getting damaged.

He showed the medal's case on his dedicated knitting and crochet Instagram account, Made with Love by Tom Daley. The knitted piece features the pattern of the Union Jack flag on one side and the Japanese flag (to signify Tokyo 2020) on the other.

In the video, Tom laughs as he produces the tea-cozy style purse from off-screen, demonstrating how the medal packs neatly into it. “It slots in like this. It all tucks in nicely, to have a little pouch for me to carry around my medal without it getting scratched. How about that?” he said. 

“I don’t normally post things that are not necessarily knitting related on my ‘made with love’ page, but myself and Matty won the Olympics yesterday. And I thought I’d come on and just say the one thing that has kept me sane throughout this whole process is my love for knitting, crochet, and all things stitching,” he continued, later also thanking his followers on the page (of which there are more than 150,000 at the time of writing) for joining him on his knitting and crochet journey since last year. 

Tom started the account back in September of 2020, shortly before the UK entered its second lockdown of the pandemic. In the first post on the page, he said he “started knitting at the beginning of lockdown and have been obsessed ever since.” In the months since then, he’s shared his various creations to the growing audience – ranging from sweaters and vests to cat beds and cat beds and plant pot covers. He’s also knitted himself a snazzy pair of swimming trunks that he says he adapted from an existing bikini bottom pattern – although they might not be suitable for a jump from the 10-meter diving board!
