Not for nothing, but, Gray Malin has been transforming spaces with shades of Living Coral since it was, well, just coral. In November, the artist and his husband, Jeff Richardson, redesigned their dining room in their Los Angeles based home. Unbeknownst to them, their palette of choice would soon be named Pantone's Color of the Year 2019; and once you see the space, you'll get it.

Malin, who worked with Frontgate on designing his new space, wanted a color that would easily transition from the holiday season to daily life. Expecting twins at the time, the father-to-be went with Farrow & Ball's Pink Ground paint on the walls, with the ceiling painted Borrowed Light, one of the brands light shades of blue. The soft wall colors are paired with coral shades and playful accent pieces that prove the palette can really work with anything. "The overall warm color scheme feels simple, yet elegant," he says. And, if you don't think shades of pink and orange can exist as Christmas decorations, think again.

"I wanted the room finished in time for the holidays, but for it to be able to easily transition into a more timeless space," Malin explains. With gold flatware and the use of florals, he was able to transform the room into something very bright and merry. "It really made sense to use metallic tableware and decorative accessories in lieu of the more traditional holiday colors of red and green," he says.

Malin's secret to a festive space that's not overwhelming is keeping an open mind, and not boxing himself in by thinking traditional items are the only way. That tableware you're swooning over? A perfect example. "It works effortlessly for any time of year and any special occasion," he says. As for the tree, he used gold pear ornaments that also worked into his centerpiece arrangements to add a "wow factor."

To no surprise, Malin is big into seasonal artwork. "If you have the storage space, a prominently placed holiday-inspired print will be a subtle, yet shining star of your holidays," he says. His "shining star" is his very own Gray Malin x Rockefeller Center framed piece, placed perfectly on his sideboard.
