GrandPass is back and giving older caregivers a break this summer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The GrandPass is back for season two this year, and it aims to help grandparents and other older caregivers care for their children this summer.

GrandPass is giving children (kindergarten through eighth grade) the opportunity to go to a fun, week-long summer camp, allowing their caregivers (55 and older) to reset and take a break.

The program is funded by the Mid-America Regional Council Department of Aging and Adult Services, and the free week of summer camp is offered to kids who live in approved locations throughout the region.

Currently, the Missouri counties of Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray are a part of those regions.

“Our camps give older caregivers the peace of mind to know that when they drop off their children they are going to be in a safe and caring environment and also have a great time,” Senior District Program Director for the YMCA Jordan Elo said. “So, if we can provide that assurance and a fun environment, it’s a win-win.”

Elo described the program as not only giving older caregivers time off but also giving their children, who might not normally be able to go to camp, the opportunity to enjoy a whole new experience.

Sandra Claussen, the caregiver to two grandsons, sent the boys to camp with the help of GrandPass last year. Prior to the program, Claussen said she was worried about keeping them active in the summer months because she lacked the support and resources.

However, with the help of GrandPass, she was able to resolve these worries.

“To be able to have a free week of camp is a blessing,” Claussen said. “It’s a gift.”

The benefits of the program are not just felt by the caregivers, though. Children also feel the positive repercussions of the week away because they are encouraged to learn new skills, grow outdoors, make friends and try new activities.

To be eligible for the GrandPass, caregivers must be related to their children by blood, marriage or legal agreement. Children must also live in the same home as their caregivers and the biological parents cannot live in the home.
