New Grand Theft Auto Videogame Will (Allegedly) Feature Surfing

Compared to other sports, surfing doesn’t have much history with videogames.

Back in the early 2000s, there was Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer, Transworld Surf, and Sunny Garcia Surfing – games with archaic graphics, unrealistic surfing, and waves that looked nothing like they do in real-life; yet the games were beloved by surfers of the time.

Since then, surfing and videogames have pretty much fizzled out.

However, surfing could, once again, be coming to a gaming console near you soon; and this time from one of the biggest franchises in videogame history.

Grand Theft Auto – the much-loved series in which players can virtually live out their most criminal fantasies (car-jacking, beating up random people on the street, robbing banks, etc.) – is gearing up to release the sixth edition of the franchise, and early reports suggest surfing might be involved.

Per a report from gaming website Xfire:

“It's speculated that water might play a more active role - literally. We're not just talking about more realistic waves, improved swimming mechanics, or a more lifelike interaction between objects and water. It's believed that GTA 6 will have a completely new feature: surfing!”

Additionally, a Twitter account dedicated to the release of GTA 6, practically confirmed that surfing will be featured in the new game, writing:

“Rockstar Games has reportedly hired a team of 20 engineers that works exclusively on GTA 6’s water physics, introducing surfing for the first time in the series.”

The question is: How realistic will the surfing be? Can players surf at videogame versions of real-life waves? Which waves will they be? Being that this is GTA, will violence somehow be incorporated into the surfing side quests? And how so?

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
