Granblue Fantasy Relink, the first console RPG in the Granblue series, released just two weeks ago, but it seems like the game has been a massive hit for developer Cygames. The company announced today that 1 million copies of Granblue Fantasy Relink have been sold in just under two weeks.

In a press release, as well as with a post on Twitter, Cygames revealed that over 1 million players had bought a copy of Granblue Fantasy Relink, a frankly impressive number given its extended development time and relatively low-key marketing campaign. The game was announced all the way back in 2016, and originally had PlatinumGames attached to assist with development before Cygames went solo in 2019.

Granblue Fantasy was originally a mobile game released in Japan only in 2014. The game has been played by tens of millions of players, both in Japan and eventually overseas, with Cygames releasing an option language patch with English support, though it was never officially released on mobile storefronts outside of Japan.

Relink received positive reviews from the press when it was released earlier this month, racking up scores of 81/100 on PC and 80/100 on PS5 on review score aggregator Metacritic. GLHF’s own review over on videogames.si.com gave it a 7/10, praising its presentation and gameplay but lamenting that it was over just a little bit too soon.

Still, in an era of gigantic releases, especially in the JRPG realm, it was definitely a breath of fresh air. In the past month alone we’ve seen the release of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload, both of which span for 80 hours or more, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is just around the corner and who knows how huge that game is going to be. Having a game that only takes you about 20-30 hours is a blessing in that regard.

Granblue Fantasy Relink is available now on PS4, PS5, and PC via Steam.
