Lizzo’s Grammy evening was “good as hell.” The pop superstar is celebrating her impressive five Grammy nominations, including winning the highly coveted Record of the Year award for “About Damn Time,” with a chic orange manicure that has me dreaming of warmer weather.

Lizzo's stiletto tangerine nails feature crystal-adorned roses created by her go-to manicurist, Eri Ishizu, who first met the pop superstar in 2018. For her part, Ishizu applied the opaque cream-finish nail polish from one of my favorite cheap Amazon beauty brands: OPI! And the best part? The exact shade of Lizzo's nail polish (OPI Silicon Valley Girl) costs just under $11.50 on Amazon.

Lizzo's Grammy nails are a masterclass in elevated monochromatic beauty on a budget, and I simply can't get enough. So, as Best Products' beauty editor, I seized the chance to chat with Ishizu after she finished Lizzo's manicure for a full nail tutorial and to learn more about the inspiration behind the stunning lewk and their collaborative process.

Lizzo's Grammy Nails Tutorial

“A lot of people [are] going for minimalism, but she went maximalist. She’s one of the very few people who are able to do that correctly,” says Ishizu. And Lizzo’s Grammy nails were the perfect embodiment of her maximalist vibe — and it won’t cost you a ton of money or time to recreate her manicure at home.

  1. Handmade details: Ishizu created stiletto-shaped acrylic nails, then applied hand-molded rose accents to compliment Lizzo's floral Dolce & Gabbana coat. “We love square nails. However, pointy nails make the fingers longer. She already has beautiful hands and fingers — long and skinny — but it’s really nice to add a little bit of length and make it look more elegant than doing squares,” explains Ishizu.

  2. Apply nail polish: Next, she applied the star of the show: OPI Gel Color nail polish in Silicon Valley Girl from the brand's Spring 2023 collection dubbed Me Myself and OPI.

  3. Cure the first layer: After, she used the OPI UV light to cure Lizzo's Grammy nails for 60 seconds.

  4. Cure the second coat: She sealed the second coat of OPI nail polish by curing it one more time for 60 seconds under the OPI UV light.

  5. Embrace a crystal vision: To elevate Lizzo's already attention-grabbing manicure and compliment the crystal-embellished form-fitting gown by Dolce & Gabbana, she added a few subtle crystals onto the roses.

  6. Matteify: The final step to Lizzo's Grammy manicure is to apply a layer of OPI GelColor Stay Matte Top Coat and cure for 2 minutes. “When you use a matte top coat on top of a bright color, the matte finish brings out this pop tone,” she says.

Q&A with Eri Ishizu on Working With Lizzo

As a former Billboard writer, covering the Grammys is my version of the Olympics. And since I can't get enough of Lizzo's glam, here are more details from my conversation with Ishizu. We chatted about their longtime partnership, creative process, and more.

Q: When and how did you and Lizzo first meet?

A: We met in 2018 through someone I know who worked for the label [Atlantic Records], and she [Lizzo] was in town doing something, and she wanted to get leopard-print nails. And that’s how I met her. But the funny thing is, we didn’t see each other for a year and a half after that. She lived in LA, I was in New York, so we would DM each other sometimes. She’d ask if I had moved yet, but I didn’t. We got reunited for the 2019 Met Gala with the pink nails, and ever since then, we haven't been separated.

Q: Tell us about your chemistry — why do you two work together so well?

A: We bonded over so many things, women-to-women, talking about nails, Japanese anime and “Sailor Moon,” zodiac signs, boys, and all kinds of stuff. We've known each other for so long, at this point, I think we really understand each other. Our personality, what she wants in beauty, nails, anything.

Q: What was the inspiration for the evening? Any specific reference points?

A: Lizzo is very open with her glam, and then everybody does their thing. So a lot of time, we don't really speak about like, “This is what I’m going to do, or this is what I want from Lizzo’s end.” It’s more so trusting each other. In glam, the stylists, we more so collaborate, and tonight was the beautiful Dolce & Gabbana coat and dress. When I saw the coat had big 3-D flowers all over, and the dress was also a monochromatic orange tone with a little bit of crystal.

The last time we came to the Grammys was in 2019, and we did some little jewels hanging with statement nails. So, I wanted to do something memorable and statement-making, and Lizzo was very happy about it. I wanted it to be very monochromatic because the coat she was wearing only showed her face and hands, so I wanted to blend in, and match and that's why I chose that color. Her dress was also matte-coated, not shiny finish, so that's another reason why I wanted to do the matte finish [with the top coat.] I really wanted her nails to really blend in the monochrome to match the colors of her outfit.
