Grammys 2021: Megan Thee Stallion Takes Home Best New Artist

Megan Thee Stallion took home best new artist at the Grammys 2021 ceremony, and she shouted out her late mother during her acceptance speech. Megan is the first female rapper to win best new artist in 22 years. (The last one was Lauryn Hill. They’re the only two who have won!)
“Thank you to my mama,” she said. “She always believed I could do it.”
“I don’t want to cry,” Megan said at the beginning of her speech. “I want to say, everybody is amazing. Every artist that is nominated for this award is so amazing.” (Megan beat out Ingrid Andress, Phoebe Bridgers, Chika, Noah Cyrus, D Smoke, Doja Cat, and Kaytranada for the honor.)
Megan Thee Stallion racked up several Grammys 2021 nominations this year, including record of the year, best rap song, best rap performance, and best new artist. The “Savage” remix with Beyoncé won for Best Rap Performance, making it the first all-women collab to take home the prize.
Megan also collaborated with Cardi B in 2020 on “WAP,” which dominated the internet, streaming, and radio. To the people mad at the song’s sex-positive message, Megan said last year to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, “First of all, I wanna say thank you to Cardi for even putting me on the song. But, I mean, I felt like [the backlash] was really, like, a little weird. I know the Republicans have been having a bad year, and they probably needed to take their frustration out somewhere.”
She continued, “But I wanna tell them thank you for the streams! Because without you, I don’t know if we would’ve been here! But no, them people crazy—why you worried about my WAP?”
Cardi B echoed this sentiment. “The people that the song bothers are usually conservatives or really religious people, but my thing is I grew up listening to this type of music,” she said on the Australian radio show The Kyle and Jackie O Show last year. “Other people might think it’s strange and vulgar, but to me it’s almost like really normal, you know what I’m saying?”
