When 30-year-old Jéssica Balbino left her house on Monday, she noticed something heartbreakingly unfortunate. Someone had graffitied “Fat Jessica” on the exterior wall of her home.

Body shaming is never, ever okay and we cannot imagine what would possess someone to write something so offensive directly on someone’s home, on their safe space. However, when the Brazilian woman posted a photo of the spray-painted words on Facebook, she responded in the best way possible.

Aí hoje eu acordei pra ir trabalhar e tinha essa pichação no meu muro. Acho que faltou o ‘linda’ na frente, mas, ainda…

“So today I woke up and found this written on my wall. I think they forgot to write ‘pretty’, but at least I’m glad they wrote something I really am,” writes Jéssica. “If the intent was to offend, it went wrong because it represents me. I would be upset if they said I was stupid, criminal or something like that. Fat is exactly what I am.”

Before she even posted her message on Facebook, Jéssica actually shared the graffiti image with some friends. She told BuzzFeed Brazil, “I got a number of interesting reactions; they said I should have a barbecue by the wall and get people to spray more graffiti, with words like ‘pretty’, ‘incredible’, etc.”

Someone else took the time to meet Jéssica at her office, so they could present her with a rose and note that touchingly reads, “There’s no way that wall has enough space to do you justice.”

Along with her friends’ love, support, and kind words, Jéssica is choosing to look at the graffiti from a different point-of-view. Rather than viewing it as offensive, she sees it as being both true and funny. “Being fat is something that’s impossible to hide from society, you know?” says Jéssica. “You can hide being a criminal, a homophobe, being prejudiced, but you can’t hide being fat! So the graffiti summed me up pretty well!”

Though the harsh words may be painted on Jéssica’s wall for all to see, there’s literally another side to this story. A few months ago, the 30-year-old had written “more love” on the other side of her wall.
