Photographer Aviv Grimm (@grimvr) has curated a living space with meaningful artifacts from her life. In this episode of ITK: Do You Live Here?, the New York-based artist invites us into her unique black-and-white living space and gives us an in-depth tour of what she calls her “New York City Grotto.”

“I really like surrounding myself with art and things that inspire me,” Aviv says. “I’m a photographer and artist, so I need to see things that are beautiful at all times to feel inspired.”

Adorned with a large gallery wall of artwork, Aviv’s living room is decorated with darkly painted walls and a white tile ceiling. The space is furnished with a black, tufted couch, black wooden tables and Victorian-style lamps. In Aviv’s opinion, the most beautiful piece in the room is a pair of custom-made puppets depicting her and her husband. Another striking piece is a small end table designed with a knight in armor as the pedestal holding up the tabletop.

Next, Aviv leads us into her dressing room, a space adjacent to the living room and separated by a Gothic-style room divider. This space features a clothes hanger with all of Aviv’s styles displayed alongside a broken chandelier used to store and display her handbags. Atop her black vanity sits a golden-framed mirror, with weapons hanging on the wall above. All of Aviv’s jewelry is displayed on her matching wooden dresser. She says, “I love jewelry. I think it’s the most important part of any outfit or any day.”

We tour the kitchen next, as Aviv points out her “Kitchen Gargoyle” — a decorative towel ring that protects her while she makes “potions and things.” Aviv explains that the kitchen was very ugly when she first moved in, with white walls and brown cabinets that were falling apart. The room is now painted black with matching black cabinets and white countertops. The cabinet pulls are antique knobs, and the backsplash is tin tile.

The next room we visit is the bedroom, or as Aviv describes it, “My crypt where I lay my head to rest every night.” There is even an antique casket plaque that reads “At Rest” mounted over the bed. Like most rooms in the apartment, the bedroom features parquet floors, black walls and a white tile ceiling. Some of Aviv’s favorite decor pieces in the room include her doll coffin of antique dolls she collects frequently, her curio cabinet and a black, Victorian-style sofa that she often works from home on.
