Wedding-related searches on the social media platform reveal some surprising new themes

The weddings world is being shaken up by some surprising new trends.

According to Pinterest's 2024 Wedding Report, today's brides and grooms are passing on timeless traditions to embrace new visions of what a wedding can be.

For some, that means skipping the stress of large weddings and instead opting for smaller, more casual affairs — what Pinterest has dubbed "quiet life weddings."

Others are dismissing the long-held idea that a wedding color palette should focus on white, cream and other soft, neutral colors. Instead, they're bringing the rainbow, whether it's red wedding dresses or bold-colored flower bouquets.

"Gen Z specifically is leading the charge in a rebellion against the neutral beige and white wedding, sparking a renaissance in colorful, vibrant wedding aesthetics," Pinterest said in the report.

Other intriguing new trends including a dark and moody "gothic glamour" aesthetic and a nostalgic interest in vintage wedding looks and inspirations that capture "the timeless elegance of eras past."

Here's a breakdown of the biggest new trends sweeping the wedding industry, according to Pinterest, which sees more than 3 billion wedding-related searches and more than 10 billion wedding ideas saved on its platform annually.

Quiet Life Weddings

Pinterest searches and pins reflect a growing shift away from costly, over-the-top weddings in favor of more relaxed, intimate nuptials. "Pinners are putting more emphasis on quality time with loved ones and guest experiences," Pinterest said.

Based on trending venues, people are looking for cozy environments to say "I do." Searches for "small backyard wedding reception" spiked by 300%, while "wedding dinner party" queries increased by 150%.

Venues that bring the couple and their wedding guests closer to nature are also increasingly popular, judging by significant jumps in searches for concepts including "rural wedding," "small forest wedding" and "whimsical garden wedding."

Simple styling

The quiet life concept is also translating to wedding attire, hair and makeup. Pinterest searches for "simple wedding gowns" grew by 205%. "Wedding dress jumpsuit" spiked a staggering 1,000%. Other popular clothing themes include "short bridal gown," "forest fairy wedding dress" and "earthy wedding dress."

When it comes to hair, natural, easy-going looks are topping searches. Pinterest users are interested in "messy bun hairstyles," "wedding loc styles" and "natural curly wedding hairstyles."

As for makeup, searches for "natural glam bridal makeup" soared by 710%, while other glam-related keywords include "clean," "ethereal" and "soft."

Vintage Charm

Perhaps fueled in part by the success of period dramas such as Bridgerton, The Buccaneers and The Crown, brides and grooms are turning to the past for inspiration for their weddings.

"It seems some couples are drawn to the charm and romance of bygone eras, as well as the classic and refined aesthetic they bring. Some may even choose to use family heirlooms like vintage rings to add sentimental value," Pinterest said.

"Pearl jewelry wedding" searches jumped by 560%, while "vintage wedding rings antique" grew by 430%. Dress-related searches point to an interest in 1970s- and Victorian-inspired aesthetics.

On the decor front, "70s inspired wedding" searches climbed 1,800%. Pinterest users are also on the hunt for decor inspiration ideas related to the 1960s and 1970s, as well as "vintage Mexican" and "vintage Italian" weddings.

Gen Z, in particular, is driving searches for "vintage lace wedding dress," "vintage wedding rings" and "vintage wedding cake."

Vibrant Vows

Mirroring a shift in the home decor world toward more eclectic, colorful pieces and themes, weddings also are evolving from understated to bold and vibrant.

"Pinners, especially Gen Z ones, are embracing bright colors throughout their wedding decor and outfits. Gen Z seems to have a fascination for red in particular, with increasing searches for red wedding dresses and red roses as decor," Pinterest said.

In addition to specific colors such as burnt orange, sage green, blue and pastel purple, searches for "colorful garden wedding," "kitsch wedding" and "vibrant wedding colors" have increased.

Gen Z seems particularly focused on red, searching for "red bride," "red heart cake" and "red rose wedding."

Gothic Glamour

Dark, decadent wedding inspirations have emerged as a major new trend, offering brides and grooms an alternative to the classic neutrals palette.

"With searches like 'dark romance aesthetic” (+270%) and 'moody makeup' (+100%) increasing since last year, it’s no surprise Pinners are looking to incorporate a moody ambiance into their weddings," Pinterest said. "This creates a sense of intimacy, mystery and drama, which some couples may find romantic or captivating."

Popular search trends for “gothic glamour” weddings include "black dress bridal party," "moody wedding colors" and "dark romantic wedding decor."
