“Gossip Girl” Reboot Will Talk About Dan Humphrey, Blair Waldorf, and More
If you, like us, have been wondering how the new reboot of Gossip Girl will address the monolithic changes that have taken place on social media since the show debuted back in the mid-00s, you’re not alone. We know that the HBO Max update of the CW series will be set in the modern day, but things have changed a lot since S, B, Lonely Boy, Chuck, and all the rest caused trouble all around New York City. How is the new show planning to address these changes, and will we get an update on our favorite OGs? According to executive producer Joshua Safran, it’s all happening — and we may see some familiar faces in the near future. Maybe.
"Well, we talk about what happened to Dan [Humphrey], so I might have to text Penn and see if he's really available," Safran told ET. "Penn also works constantly, but we'll see if we can rope him in there. That would be great. I would love for everyone to come back if they wanted to. The universe still exists. The characters talk about Serena, Blair, Chuck, Dan."
Safran compared the whole GG world to the Marvel universe, saying, “It’s not a continuation or a sequel. It truly is just looking at a different angle.” The new show will be set at St. Jude’s and Constance Billard school, where the original crew got their education amidst all that scheming, and while a new cast of characters will fill their uniforms and headbands, we may hear the names “Blair” and “Serena” from time to time. "They are a part of the world," Safran shared. "The characters talk about them and that they do exist. So, yeah, I would love to have them come back. The show jumped five years in the future when it ended and we are past that five years now, so it's whole new things that they could be doing."
Certain original cast members have expressed interest in returning for the reboot, including Chace Crawford, AKA Nate Archibald, and even the Queen Bee herself, Leighton Meester, who revealed back in May that she hadn't yet been asked about returning. While it’s not confirmed that anyone is making a return to the Upper East Side, it’s a possibility, and that means we’re definitely tuning in.
Safran also addressed the changing world of technology and how the new show will work; we know that the original Gossip Girl site closed when Dan revealed himself to be the mastermind, but it will be back in some form. (Its original narrator, Kristin Bell, is also back to reprise her role.)
"I think it very much represents where we will be at in 2020 when the show airs. It really looks at how social media has changed," Safran said. "You know, the first time around, when the show started people were, like, checking in places on Foursquare and updating their locations on Facebook. Things we would never do now because we don't want anyone to know where we are. That change alone changes the dynamic of what Gossip Girl means and how Gossip Girl interacts with the kids this day and age, so I think it's gonna be really interesting to see the modern age reflected through Gossip Girl."
