"Gossip Girl" Producer Josh Schwartz on What to Expect From the HBO Reboot

"We are all Gossip Girl now, in our own way."

The recent announcement of a Gossip Girl reboot, while endlessly exciting for fans of the CW drama, certainly raised more questions than it provided answers. Would the original cast return for the next chapter? Would Kristen Bell offer up her voice again for the classic narration? Who, if anyone, would be the next Gossip Girl, after the identity of the all-knowing spy was unveiled in the 2012 series finale? Actually, we might have some intel on that last mystery.

Series co-creator Josh Schwartz explained at the 2019 TV Critics Association summer press tour that now, Gossip Girl is actually all of us. Yep, you read that right.

“It didn't really feel like a group of adults who were being controlled by Gossip Girl would make a lot of sense,” Schwartz explained, per E! News. “There was something really interesting about this idea that we are all Gossip Girl now, in our own way. We are all purveyors of our own social media surveillance state, and how that's evolved, and how that has morphed and mutated and telling that story through a new generation of Upper East Side high school kids felt like the right time.” OK, fair, but does that mean we get to recite Gossip Girl’s iconic one-liners now? If so, I’ll need time to practice.

Schwartz, who is returning alongside Stephanie Savage to co-produce the upcoming HBO series, added that he isn’t even quite sure whether to call the project a “reboot” or “remake,” noting that the story will take place in the same universe as the OG Gossip Girl, only eight years later.

Of course, that fact begs one of the most pressing questions from fans: Will Serena, Blair, or any of the other Upper East Siders make an appearance in the new series? According to Schwartz, it’s not entirely out of the question.

“We've reached out to all of them to let them know it was happening and we'd love for them to be involved if they want to be involved, but certainly didn't want to make it contingent upon [them being involved],” the producer explained, according to Entertainment Tonight. “They played these characters for six years, and if they felt like they were good with that, we want to respect that, but obviously…it would be great to see them again.”

FWIW, we have a feeling plenty of the OG cast would be down. When asked about a reboot in May, Leighton Meester offered up a coy “never say never,” and Chace Crawford once compared a Gossip Girl reunion to a Friends episode, saying that he’d be “open to looking at something.”

We’ll have to wait and see what exactly the new Gossip Girl has in store for us, but it sure will be a different show without the big unanswered question running through its entire narrative. If you need me, I’ll be working on my best “XOXO, Gossip Girl” impression in the mirror for the rest of the day.
