From Town & Country

Gossip Girl is one of those shows that never really left us, instead becoming a cultural shorthand for all things preppy, drama-ridden, and wealthy teen-centric. The show's cast of Upper East Siders are reliably invoked any time headbands come back into style (which is pretty often) or prep schools are in the headlines (also fairly common)—and the series' fanbase has remained strong enough to bring about a sequel series (sadly, presumably on pause amid the pandemic), some eight years after it ended.

But even given all that, Gossip Girl's latest resurgence—in the form of a dumb yet satisfying meme—is a little unexpected. Sure, the internet has been riffing on the show's "xoxo" sign-off and lead characters forever, but this new iteration is... not even really about the show.

It simply presents a photo of Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) seeming to ask a question, above what appears to be a promotional image of Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) with the Gossip Girl logo—except, it's been slightly rearranged.

Rather than "gossip girl," it might be rearranged to say, for example, "go piss girl," or "pig girl," or, simply, "pi." All of these Bananagram-ified logos are presented as Blair's answer to Serena's question.

Are these the most intelligent memes to grace our Twitter feeds? No, most definitely not. But they are still funny, regardless, and given the current international health crisis, it's actually quite nice to not have to think that hard. So yeah, these are our King Lear—your move, Shakespeare.
