'Scream' Trailer Teases Ghostface's True IdentityParamount

The first official trailer for Scream VI has dropped, giving fans a more detailed look at the slasher sequel following on from that recent teaser set on the New York City Subway.

Courteney Cox is back as Gale Weathers, now officially the only remaining character to appear in every installment of the horror franchise, and she's joined by multiple returning characters from 2022's Scream revival, including Jenna Ortega as Tara, Melissa Barrera as Sam, Mason Gooding as Chad and Jasmin Savoy-Brown as Mindy. This first look also features the return of Hayden Panettiere as Kirby, a fan-favorite character from Scream 4 who was confirmed to have survived in the most recent movie.

The trailer ratchets up the tension from the very start, following Sam and Tara as they try to escape the latest villain to don the Ghostface mask in a chase sequence in a bodega. And it soon becomes clear that this new killer is unlike anyone they've ever dealt with before, as the characters travel underground and discover a museum-like "shrine" to all of the prior killers. What's unclear is whether this is the work of the killer, or of a character like Kirby, who has been off doing who-knows-what since her nearly-fatal encounter with Ghostface.

Of course, a twisted version of hero worship has been a plot point behind copycat killings in the Scream universe before, but the trailer goes to great lengths to tell fans that this time, it's different.

Does this mean the killer is somebody we already know from a previous film? In addition to subverting and playing with horror tropes, each existing chapter in the Scream franchise has also functioned as a murder mystery: the killer (or on many occasions, killers plural) is always a character that was introduced in the first act. This means that any new character in each movie should be treated with suspicion by our heroes and the audience.

But if this newest Ghostface has been studying the Woodsboro Murders for some time, it is possible that they could turn out to be either a background character we never gave much thought to from an earlier movie... or even more chillingly, it could be one of the main cast. And if that's the case, the most obvious suspect is Sam. The fifth movie revealed that Sam is the illegitimate daughter of Billy Loomis, the original Ghostface, and that she carries at least some of his "darkness" inside her.

Would it be too obvious, though, for Sam to emerge as the killer, given that we already know she is capable of great violence? We'll just have to wait until March 10 to find out.
