This Gorgeous “Moody” Loft Has the Most Perfect All-Black Bed Nook

Artist and photographer Gerald Posley has been renting this one-bedroom loft for about eight years. Located in a former appliance factory turned into cool lofts, it’s located “right off the Parkway” in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Posley was actually in a studio in this same building for a year-and-a-half before outgrowing that space and needing more, which led him to this 916-square-foot one-bedroom loft with a small den.

But Posley doesn’t use his loft’s floor plan quite the way it was intended. “I flipped the script and turned the bedroom in to my working space. I use the den as my bedroom,” he writes. “The unit features 17.5-foot ceilings throughout except for the den area. I love the intimacy that the lower ceilings create in my sleeping space. I completely embraced this vibe and and went blackout Black, from floor to ceiling. I love this dark and moody vibe.”

Posley explains that the entire home, save for the cozy bed nook, is full of bright daylight. “I have the east view, which faces New York city. I’m delivered these amazing ever-changing views daily,” he begins. “I recently added black to the window walls and the peninsula. The effect pulled the main space together and gave it a little edge and graphic punch.”

“I am so grateful for where I am now and I show my appreciation by enjoying every opportunity to improve the space,” he writes. “Design is in my blood and my home is the perfect vessel to pour this part of my creativity in to. I have worked as a showroom stylist and visual merchandiser. Although I did not see that skill set coming I fully embraced it and never looked back.”

Tell us a little about your home and the people who live there: I like things clean and simple for the most part. I’m a Gemini and am of two minds in many things. High-contrast black and white makes sense. A little moody, a little broody, and also airy and optimistic. I studied visual communication in college and have an enduring love for typography and good design. I surround myself with interesting books related to art, design, fashion, photography, and design furniture.

Describe your home’s style in five words or fewer: Graphic, moody, masculine, chic, urban.

What is your favorite room and why? I can’t pick one favorite room. I love them all. They are each very important to me for different reasons. I do have a fondness for my kitchen from a functional standpoint. It is a beautiful space, but I really love to cook and that room serves me quite well.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? The last thing that I purchased for my apartment was a yin and yang salt and pepper shaker set — black and white, of course. I found it at a great resale spot in Long Island City called Remix. It is a fun place.

I recently painted all of the black walls in my apartment. It was the most ambitious home painting project I’ve ever taken on. I am in the process of creating artwork for my walls. First up is a self-portrait in graphite.

What’s your best decorating, shopping, cleaning, or organizing advice? Clutter is the enemy, no matter what your design style is. A clean and well-organized space is so important. When you take care of your space, it will take care of you. Large floor lamps of good and interesting design are your friend. Invest in good houseplants and take good care of them.
