Fried/air-fried took first place, ranking highest in 16 states. In particular, that includes fried or air-fried buffalo wings in several East Coast states, like Rhode Island, New York, and Virginia. Surprisingly, more states, including Wyoming, North Dakota, and Vermont, preferred the healthier frying method. Coming in second place to fried/air fried is baked/smoked. The last three categories, wet, dry rub, and other are tied in third place with eight states each. The states that uniquely searched for wet (and hot) chicken wings ahead of the Super Bowl are all in the South, including Ree’s home state of Oklahoma.
On the other hand, for those who are fans of a dry rub, you’ll want to consider taking a trip to one of the coastal capitals of the country. Dry salt and pepper took top honors in California, dry salt and vinegar in Washington and Hawaii, and dry lemon pepper in Florida, Maryland, and Alaska. Other notable wing types on the map include crispy chicken in Maine, garlic parmesan in Connecticut, and cauliflower wings in Montana and Colorado.
