Bright, white kitchens have long been a classic design choice, but a new contender for kitchen trends is entering the scene in 2024. The dark and moody design trend isn’t stopping at powder rooms: we predict that dark-toned kitchens are going to be a hit next year.

We’ve gathered a few tips for getting your kitchen ready to ring in the new year in style.

The main feature of many trendy dark kitchens is their rich color palette. Whether it’s a bold, deep backsplash or a consistent shade from cabinets to walls, choosing one main backing color is a good way to achieve a stylish, moody kitchen.

Low, moveable lighting can help accentuate kitchen features you want to draw more attention to—@delve.interiors decorates her apothecary-style kitchen with lamps that highlight her display shelves.

You don’t have to go straight for an overwhelming black, either. Deeper shades of blue and green are some of the most popular choices for moody rooms, as they create a warm, calming kitchen space.

If you are planning on incorporating dark greys or blacks into your kitchen, you may want to consider adding a small feature element that brightens the space lightly. Think light-colored backsplash, bold faucet fixtures, or light-toned display cabinets. These features can also help prevent a moody kitchen from feeling closed in.

Tip

If you’re working with a smaller kitchen, you may want to keep the upper cabinets or backsplash a little lighter to help the space feel larger.

To emphasize a dark color palette, low, warm lighting is essential. This look can be achieved using light dimmers, well-placed lamps or bar lights, and even strategic candles (battery-powered is best for the kitchen).

Dim accent lighting can also help to transform lighter spaces into a richer moody style. This is also useful for fans of the aesthetic who aren’t sure if they’re ready to go for a completely dark-colored palette.

Kitchenware is also an easy way to help make your dark kitchen pop. Copper cookware will add a lighter accent to your kitchen, especially if you hang your pots and pans in the darkest area of your kitchen.

If you’re looking to go even moodier, matte black is a good cookware choice, as it will blend with the rest of the space. Practical display elements—like kitchen towels, serving trays, and utensils—can vary.

Thinking about swapping out faucets or cabinet handles? Gold is a good choice for rich kitchens, as it provides an elegant accent (and looks fantastic in moody lighting). Bolder, light-colored metals—especially copper—tend to be more popular in dark kitchens, since they add a bright element without detracting from dark tones.

Don't shy away from giving your space a moody makeover in 2024—you might even decide to bring the trend out of the kitchen and into the rest of your living space.
