Michael Patrick Thornton as Clay in 'The Good Doctor'

Wait, what happened to Lim's boyfriend? It's a thought we've all had since Clay Porter (Michael Patrick Thornton) last appeared on The Good Doctor in Season 6 Episode 10. But fans can rest assured he's still around, even if we never actually see him and the engagement ring he once offered Lim remains tucked away in a proverbial sock drawer. We know because he got a shoutout in this week's Season 7 episode, "Date Night."

The backstory: Lim's mother (played by Bess Armstrong, mom to Angela Chase in My So-Called Life) is in town for two weeks for a drug trial. It's nothing serious—just her way of checking up on her workaholic daughter. But when an exasperated Lim finds out, she insists her mother cancel her hotel reservation and stay with her instead. "Clay is in Chicago doing a fellowship and he'll be gone for another month," Lim says. How convenient.

Lest you’d forgotten in the nearly 1.5 years since he was first introduced on the show, Clay is also a doctor. Lim met him through Dr. Danni Powell (a character who came and went on the series) when she was paralyzed, playing basketball and bonding with other people in wheelchairs. Eventually, Clay proposed to Lim, but she couldn't bring herself to say yes just as she was learning to walk again (too much too soon), so the engagement ring sat awkwardly on her kitchen table until Clay mercifully put it away. In his last scene on the show, Lim asked Clay to move in with him instead, and he accepted. He's been missing from the show ever since.

Could another appearance from Clay be in The Good Doctor's future? One hopes. Lim deserves a happy ending that's more than just nodded to on the series. But with six episodes remaining in the show's seventh and final season, time is not on our side.
