Goldendoodle Refuses To Eat Unless His Owners Pretend To Add Ranch to His Food

As dogs get older, both their metabolisms and their energy levels tend to slow down, and you may find your senior dog eating less than they did when they were a puppy. This usually isn't a cause for concern (But if your own pup misses one day of food you should consult with your veterinarian) but that didn't stop one clever pet owner from tricking their senior Golden Doodle into eating their dinner.

Watch the following to see what this dog needs to have added to eat their food.

The hilarious video, shared by the TikTok account for @mickymets shows the lengths that so many owners of senior dogs take to get their pups to eat their food. So many TikTok users can relate and @Devious comments, "I don't feel so bad now with my fussy Labrador. He won't eat unless we sit with him like it's a candlelit dinner." @Debi adds, "My dog would only eat it I put shredded cheese on top. I would literally put one shred and he would eat. No shred, no eat." @Kitty adds, "It’s like me microwaving food to make my 13 yr old eat her prescription food she hated. Love this!"

If you haven't resorted to pretending to dress your pup's dinner with ranch dressing, here are some other steps you can take to encourage your dog to eat.

How to Encourage a Senior Dog to Eat His Food

First of all, speak to your veterinarian. They may be able to prescribe an appetite stimulant like Mirtazapineto help your dog.

Gently warm up your dog's food in the microwave to encourage them to eat. Make sure there are no hot spots in the food before serving them.

Try mixing a little wet food into their dry food if they are used to only eating dry food. Some dogs enjoy the gravy from wet food when they get older. You can also try an elevated food dish if you think bending down to eat could be causing your dog pain due to arthritis.

Try adding in some dog friendly people food with their regular kibble to encourage them to eat.

Provide some company. Sitting close to your dog while they eat and offering praise when they do so is one way to encourage your pup.

People magazine reports that Zoey, the 14-year-old Golden Doodle in the above video, usually eats wet food on top of her dry food.

"We ran out of her canned food, so we were trying to fool her to eat her kibble without introducing anything that could cause her to have tummy troubles," she adds of the ranch dressing trickery.
