Golden Retriever Puppy 'Choosing' Their Human Is Too Cute to Resist

There are few moments in life that can top when you meet a new family member. Whether you're celebrating a new baby, a marriage, or even the arrival of a new pet, it can be so exciting to think of all the wonderful times to be had together. It's no wonder why new dog owners get emotional when they meet their new best friend for the first time!

Whether you first see your dog online through a rescue or at an event in person, that first moment when you lock eyes can be the beginning of something beautiful. Just ask the Golden Retriever pros at Golden Treasures Kennel! They watch so many owners fall in love with their new dogs, and they know the sweet look one puppy gave the camera on April 12 is going to do the trick. How could you not melt looking at this baby?

OMG--those eyes! This precious Golden Retriever puppy has already mastered the art of puppy dog eyes, and they're not even adopted yet! Fortunately, this little trick will be handy many, many times in life, starting with securing an adopter.

Just as the video's text says, when an adoptable puppy looks at you like this, they're choosing you! Normally, the adopters would choose their new puppy out of whoever in the litter is available for adoption, but sometimes it's just meant to go like this. Doggie instincts don't lie--even at such a young age!

"You don't pick a dog. A dog picks you," agreed commenter @missingdisney. That was certainly the case for me, too! My family and I browsed a few animal shelters before meeting our perfect pup, and it's like he came to life when we met him in the play yard. It took about 60 seconds for us to know that this was our dog, and we've been loving him for 13 beautiful years since then. Now, he's the king of the house!

How to Choose Your New Dog

Although many dog adoption stories do begin with a 'love at first sight' kind of moment, not all rescue tales go this way. Whether you meet your new dog by chance or have prepared for a new pet for months, there's no single correct way to meet your new best friend. However, it's always a good idea to do your research before bringing home any dog!

Learning about different dog breeds can give you helpful indicators of a dog's potential temperament, but breed only gets you so far. Every pup has its own individual personality and quirks, too! Instead of thinking up a list for your 'perfect dog' to check off, think of what kinds of activities you would like to enjoy with your new pet. Consider what energy level you can tolerate and what level of grooming you can commit to.

It sounds like a lot, I know--but you don't need to know everything in exact detail. When in doubt, visit your local shelter, where volunteers can play matchmaker and help you find exactly who you're looking for.
