On Sunday, January 5, the 77th annual Golden Globes officially kicked off the 2020 awards season. InStyle teamed up with Carol's Second Act star Ito Aghayere to bring you behind-the-scenes access straight from the red carpet and at the InStyle & Warner Bros. annual Golden Globes party. Here, catch up on all of the night’s best moments, from powerful acceptance speeches to exclusive celebrity interviews.

10:45 pm: Awkwafina is the first Asian woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress. She took home the honor for her role in The Farewell. "I told you I would get a job, dad," she joked in her speech.

10:39 pm: Last year there were more women of color behind the scenes in film than ever. The next phase according to Laverne Cox? Setting up programs to foster future talent. While the Orange Is the New Black star says she’s lucky to have worked with so many women on her hit Netflix show and upcoming Shondaland show Inventing Anna, there’s still work to be done for LGBTQ+ representation. When working on her documentary, if a transgender person couldn’t fill a role on set, they trained someone transgender looking to break into the industry to take on the role. 10:27 pm: The InStyle & Warner Bros. Golden Globes party is full of strong women walking around and owning the place — including Mixed-ish star Tika Sumpter. “Narratives change, and people get different opportunities. The stories we actually want to tell without being told how to tell them get told,” says Sumpter of why there needs to be female equality in the film industry. 10:20 pm: Michelle Williams wins Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for TV for Fosse/Verdon, and turned her acceptance speech into an impassioned call for women to vote in the 2020 election. “I’ve tried my very best to make a life of my own making… and I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a women’s right to choose," she said. "To choose when to have my children and with whom. Women, please vote in your own self-interest. It's what men have been doing for years, which is why the world looks so much like them. Don't forget: We are the largest voting body in this country. Let's make it look more like us."

10:15 pm: Inspirational women are everywhere. Shenae Grimes-Beech shares how the women in her life have encouraged her, from a female director at work to her sister-in-law, a powerful single mother. Watch the star’s entire interview with Ito Aghayere below.

10:07 pm: Instead of letting the heat of the Golden Globes ceremony get to him, Jason Momoa took off his jacket. His tank top is one of the most meme-able moments of the night.

10:05 pm: And the award for best red carpet selfie of night goes to...

9:55 pm: Sarah Hyland’s dream world includes equal pay for women, plus more female representation in the film industry, starting with more women directors and writers. Watch her interview from InStyle & Warner Bros. Golden Globes party here.

9:40 pm: Patricia Arquette wins Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV movie for The Act, and stressed the importance of voting in the upcoming 2020 election during her acceptance speech. “We’re not going to look back on this night in the history books,” she said. “We will see a country on the brink of war, the United States of America; a president tweeting out a threat of 52 bombs, including cultural sites; young people risking their lives, traveling across the world; people not knowing if bombs are going to drop on their kids’ heads. And the continent of Australia on fire. So while I love my kids so much, I beg all of us to give them a better world. For our kids and their kids, we have to vote in 2020. And we have to beg and plead for everyone we know to vote in 2020.”

9:20 pm: "We long to be of service and give voice to the voiceless," Laura Dern says, before joking that in her role in Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story she finally was able to give a voice to the divorce lawyer. She accepted the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.

9:05 pm: How does Kathryn Newton stay present during stressful events like the red carpet? She looks down at her toes. “It grounds you,” she tells Ito Aghayere. Hit the video below to get all of her advice on how to not sweat it when the pressure is on.

8:45 pm: Kate McKinnon presented the Carol Burnett Award for Excellence to Ellen DeGeneres and made an emotional speech about the importance of LGBTQ+ representation in media. She got choked up telling Ellen what seeing the icon onscreen meant to her as a young girl, and we got choked up watching. See what we mean, in this clip.

8:15 pm: Sometimes the most powerful appearance is one you don’t make. Russell Crowe, winner of Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for TV for The Loudest Voice, skipped the Golden Globes to protect his home and family from the bush fires currently ravaging Australia. He left the following message, which presenter Jennifer Aniston read onstage. "Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate-change based. We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy, and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is."

8:00 pm: Rita Wilson’s hair and makeup team might have been over an hour late, but she stayed Zen throughout the snafu. In the end, she made it work and walked the red carpet with husband Tom Hanks, recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.

7:50 pm: Kaitlyn Dever, nominated for her role in Unbelievable, tells InStyle on the red carpet that she's seen the industry evolve in the wake of #MeToo. "I've been in the industry now like 12 years, and I've seen a big, big shift: People are using their voices and people are being very loud. In order to see change, we just gotta push through."

7:40 pm: There’s no better place to make a couple debut than a red carpet. Rachel Bilson and Bill Hader made theirs at the Golden Globes — and he's nominated, making it an even bigger night for the Barry star and creator.

7:30 pm: There’s nothing else to say other than Jennifer Lopez looks like a straight up gift in her Valentino ballgown.

7:20 pm: The bob is still going strong in 2020, and the proof is on the Golden Globes red carpet. Stars like Greta Gerwig and Naomi Watts wore the trendy cut.

7:18 pm: InStyle's guest host for the night Ito Aghayere hits the red carpet to catch up with the night's biggest stars. The actress is wearing a black-and-white floral Carolina Herrera gown from Nova Octo. A red Jeffery Levinson clutch and matching crimson lip add a fun twist to her classic red carpet glam look.

7:15 pm: Margot Robbie’s “Comfy Glam” Golden Globes dress is an entirely new category in red carpet fashion: Her strapless Chanel Haute Couture gown features a colorful beaded top and a simple white skirt with POCKETS! Perfect for sneaking in snacks.

6:45 pm: Pose star Billy Porter wins every single red carpet he walks on. For the 2020 Golden Globes, he’s dressed like an angel that's just flown down from heaven. He’s wearing a white Alex Vinash suit with a feather train and Tiffany & Co. jewels. According to Porter, looking angelic takes some time. He told E’s Ryan Seacrest that his outfit took three months to make.

6:35 pm: Did Rose really drop her necklace in the ocean at the end of Titanic? The jewels The Politician star Zoey Deutch is wearing sure looks like the iconic accessory from the film.

6:30 pm: The Golden Globes red carpet is under way, and the stars are bringing their fashion A-game for TV and film’s biggest night. Just look at Harriet star Cynthia Erivo’s gorgeous black-and-white sequined Thom Browne dress. While chatting with E’s Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet, Erivo said the gown took 800 hours (!!!) to make.
