Inspired after his own childhood, Lee Isaac Chung’s Oscar-nominated film drama Minari tells the powerful story of a resilient Korean American family. For the director, it all began with a simple writing exercise that brought up moments from his past, he said in an interview with NPR.

"I didn't set out to just write 80 [memories], but that's how many just flowed out of me in one session," Lee told the outlet. "These were little visual memories, little details. Once I had this set of memories, I realized that there was an arc of a story there."

At the 93rd Academy Awards this Sunday night, the movie is nominated in several categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score. Plus, two stars from the Minari cast are being recognized for their individual performances: Steven Yeun for Best Actor and Yuh-Jung Youn for Best Supporting Actress.

Set in the 1980s, Minari tells the story of the Yi family who moves from California to rural Arkansas. Patriarch Jacob (Steven Yeun) aspires to have his own vegetable farm. But before approaching Texas vendors, he and his wife, Monica (Yeri Han), must first start off working with chickens. Through Jacob and Monica and the arrival of Monica's mother, Soonja (Yuh-Jung Youn), Minari shows the difficulties of acclimating to new surroundings from multiple generational viewpoints.
