Golden Globes 2024: Best and worst red carpet looks from this year's nominees, from Emma Stone to Helen Mirren

The 2024 Golden Globes are set to take over Hollywood on Sunday Jan. 7th with some of the biggest names in film and television expected to appear in their red carpet finery.

How to watch the 2024 Golden Globes

Comedian Jo Koy will serve as host of the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards touted as "Hollywood's Party of the Year" airing at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7 on CBS and the Paramount+ app. Canadian viewers can catch the star-studded ceremony on CityTV and its streaming service the CityTV+ app, or watch the awards show on Amazon Prime by adding CityTV+ as a channel for $4.99 CAD.

Actors Will Ferrell, Michelle Yeoh and Amanda Seyfried have been tapped as presenters with more names expected to be added as the ceremony approaches.

Leading this year's nominees in the film category are "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" with eight nominations apiece, while "Succession" succeeded its contemporaries by earning nine nominations. "The Bear" and "Only Murders In The Building" follow with five nods each.

As we eagerly await the 2024 red carpet kickoff, we're celebrating this year's nominees the only way we know how: by looking back at their Golden Globe red carpet hits and misses.

Emma Stone

Stone scored two nominations this year, one for Best Performance By a Female Actress nomination for her performance in this year's bizarre offering "Poor Things" and another for her role in the TV show "The Curse."

The Golden Globes are old hat for Stone who has graced the red carpet several times before.

BEST: 2012 in Valentino

City of stars! Stone celebrated her Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for "La La Land" in a baby pink celestial print gown by Valentino.

WORST: 2011 Calvin Klein

Stone earned her first Golden Globe nomination in 2011 for her role in the comedy "Easy A." The Arizona native arrived in a peachy Calvin Klein gown that competed with her dyed blonde hair and tanned skin. Instead of standing out amongst the crowd, Stone was unrecognizable and unremarkable in this monochrome look.

Margot Robbie

The "Barbie" star and producer is set to take centre stage at this year's Golden Globe Awards. After dominating every red carpet she set her perfectly pointed toe on this year, we're hoping Robbie will deliver her signature Barbie glam once more.

BEST: 2018 in Gucci

Robbie celebrated her nomination for her role in "I, Tonya" at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards by stepping out in a ornate black gown with plunging neckline by Gucci. The look fit with the directive of wearing black to show support for the Time's Up movement while adding some sparkle with the gown's bold crystal embellishments.

WORST: 2021 in Chanel

In 2018, Robbie signed on as a brand ambassador for Chanel. Although this put the star in some show-stopping high fashion looks, it also limited her options to include this dowdy ditzy print floral look.

Timothée Chalamet

Chalamet's turn in "Wonka" earned him his third Golden Globe nomination, this time for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Hopefully the star brings his risk-taking sense of style to the Golden Globes red carpet.

BEST: 2019 in Louis Vuitton

Timmy is at his best when he steps outside of the norm. In 2019, the "Beautiful Boy" actor hit the red carpet in a sequinned harness by Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton that perfectly showcased the star's edgy fashion sense and hinted at the daring off-the-runway looks that were yet to come.

WORST: 2018 in Berluti

Objectively speaking, there's nothing wrong with Chalamet's Berluti suit at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards. While the tailoring and monochromatic bow-tie and shirt combination is a technical fashion hit, the lack of personality in this red carpet look makes it one of Chalamet's worst. Instead of high-fashion, the "Call Me By Your Name" star looked like he had wandered off from a funeral and onto the red carpet.

Emily Blunt

The British star scored a nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for her role in the critically acclaimed "Oppenheimer." Blunt won a Golden Globe in 2007 in the same category for her stand-out performance in "The Devil Wears Prada."

BEST: 2010 Dolce & Gabbana

Blunt earned a nomination for her role in "The Young Victoria" and arrived to the 2010 Golden Globes on the arm of her then fiancé John Krasinski. The star perfectly paired her feminine pink Dolce & Gabbana gown with tousled waves and a smokey eye for a red carpet look that's become one of our favourites.

WORST: 2019 in Alexander McQueen

From the waist-up, this illusion gown by Alexander McQueen is firing on all cylinders. The sparkly silver colour and the detail combined with the star's frosted makeup has all the trappings of a red carpet smash hit — until you pan down to the tattered skirt. That's when things begin to fall apart (quite literally).

Taylor Swift

Are you ready for it? Taylor Swift earned a nomination in the newly created category Cinematic and Box Office Achievement for her “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film. The music phenom is set to go up against "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" — but this might be her year to take home a Golden Globe of her own.

BEST: 2014 in Monique Lhuillier

Swift hit the red carpet in a strapless colour-block gown by Monique Lhuillier that she styled with old Hollywood-inspired curls and her signature trademark red lip. Even though Swift was nominated for best song for "Sweeter Than Fiction" from the movie "Once," this look would have you thinking she was a leading lady from the big screen.

WORST: 2020 in Etro

In 2020, Swift hit the red carpet as a nominee for her song "Beautiful Ghosts" from the movie "Cats." Keeping true to the theme of all things from "Cats" being a flop, this look won't go down in history as one of her best. Although the bright floral printed dress was a departure from Swift's usual red carpet style, the oversized pattern was distracting from the star's beauty.

Natalie Portman

While it's still up for debate whether or not her film "May December" should be considered a Comedy, Portman is just one of the heavy-hitters nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Despite the controversial categorization, there's one thing we know for sure: when Natalie Portman hits the Golden Globe red carpet she's sure to turn heads.

BEST: 2011 in Viktor & Rolf

In 2011, a pregnant Portman took home a Golden Globe Award (and later an Oscar) for her performance in the ballet psycho-drama, "Black Swan." The then 29-year-old star put comfort at the forefront with this strapless Viktor & Rolf gown with jewel encrusted rose detail. Portman completed the look with statement-making jewels, crimson clutch and matching red lip.

WORST: 2000

It's so rare that Portman makes a fashion blunder that we had to go back to her first Golden Globes appearance to find something to critique. In 2000, the then teenager wore a run-of-the-mill chocolate brown dress and matching shawl to celebrate her first nomination for the film "Anywhere But Here."

Helen Mirren

Although she's usually nominated for her work in film, Mirren earned a nomination this year for her role alongside Harrison Ford in the "Yellowstone" prequel "1923." This year we fully expect Mirren looking regal on the red carpet, but despite her status as red carpet royalty, not every look from Dame Helen Mirren's past has been cause for celebration.

The timeless silhouette of this Dior Haute Couture gown combined with the the striking colour and the the $4 million USD worth of diamonds make this red carpet look our favourite Mirren fashion moment of all time.

WORST: 2011 in Badgley Mischka Couture

Mirren's gold Badgley Mischka Couture gown at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards felt less like a look fit for a screen icon and more as a go-to option for the Mother of the bride. Still, Mirren accessorized the look with $1.75 million USD in Cartier jewelry — which is never a red carpet faux pas.

Jennifer Lawrence

Lawrence's nomination for her role in "No Hard Feelings" means two thins are bound to happen at the Golden Globes: A bold red carpet look and some hilarious interviews and interactions with other stars.

BEST: 2016 in Dior

Lawrence took home the Golden Globe for her performance in "Joy" while sporting a cut-out look by Dior. Although the dress is minimalist itself, Lawrence's striking Chopard necklace added the right amount of sparkle to this modern ensemble.

WORST: 2014 in Dior

Although she picked up the award for Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in "American Hustle," this ill-fitting Dior gown made several Worst Dressed lists that year — and rightly so.
