Faith Martin

The Golden Bachelor’s Faith Martin has taken Gerry Turner home to meet her family, dined with him on a romantic yacht excursion, and was the recipient of the franchise’s First Impression rose. By all accounts, it’s been a very successful run so far on The Golden Bachelor (which continues Thursday, November 9), but behind closed doors, very few people knew how difficult Martin’s journey was to get to this point.

“Turning 60 was super weird,” she tells Glamour of her milestone birthday, which was a year ago. “I haven’t been on the best of place over the last many years. My ex-husband died, and I was grieving while also working a ton.” The confluence of events left the normally active and outgoing Martin a shell of her former self.

“I wasn’t really doing much self-care,” she says via Zoom from her home in Washington State. “I thought, Nobody’s going to see me naked anyway. What do I care?’ I gained 15 pounds. I stopped exercising. I was stressed out all the time. People would look at me and go, ‘What’s going on with you, Faith?’ and I would say, ‘It’s just not a priority right now.’ I just sort of let everything go for the past five years that I felt like I was just surviving.”

As for many women who get bogged down by life’s hardships, facing a new decade was a major turning point. At first Martin adapted the mindset that she wasn’t going to date again and would be okay spending the rest of her life alone and doing her own thing. And that’s totally fine—and understandable—of course, but something told Martin not to give up altogether.

“It wasn’t until I had a talk with myself and went, ‘I may be 60, but I’m not dead, and I really do want to make room in my life.’” So she quit the band she was in and started making room in her life for dating, having no clue just what was in store. “I feel like once you realize something about yourself, you have to take action to change it. So I had to just go, ‘Okay, I have to show the universe that I’m ready for love and take some action to make things different.’ And isn’t it weird how when you show the universe something, boom, all of a sudden I’m on The Golden Bachelor and on a yacht kissing Gerry? It happened pretty quick. I’m pretty good at manifesting when I put myself out there.”

Now, no matter what happens with Turner, 72, Martin has vowed not to look back or wish she’d had her epiphany earlier. Instead she’s embracing what the hard years have taught her.

“I have so many scars on my face. I have not been easy on myself, but it is what it is,” she says. “I’m too busy now having fun and working and doing the things that I love. When we get into our passions, that makes us happier. And maybe we look younger too.”

So for Glamour’s newest installment of Drop the Routine, Martin fills us in on how she’s practicing self-care—especially after a bout with skin cancer—why she’s not afraid to talk about injectables, and the moisturizer she swears by.

My sunscreen and moisturizer

The one thing I’ve been religious about now is sunscreen, because I ended up with skin cancer on my nose last year. I have a divot on my nose from when they did the biopsy, so I always tell everyone it’s important to wear sunscreen. However, a lot of the sunscreens smell funny and go on completely white on your face, and then you look like weird. But Supergoop’s Superscreen Daily Moisturizer SPF 40 goes on smooth and clear. I also use Supergoop’s tinted moisturizer with sunscreen in it. And then I just put bronzer on. I don’t use foundation, just bronzer.

My lip balm

EOS lip balm sticks, which I really like because they’re kind of minty.

My body oil

Rosehip oil by Frank Body because a lot of times lotions are [too] heavy on your skin. And if I’m not using this, I’m using coconut oil, the cooking kind. I just get the jar. I started using coconut oil because I’d be out in the sun and I felt dry, and for some reason the heavy lotions just didn’t feel right. So I would just grab coconut oil or even olive oil and put it on me. I put it around my cuticles too. I also always use Nivea on my neck.

My hair products

I love Kenra products. I use their moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. The smell is so good and my hair just behaves better when I use them. I have the Root Lift. I dye my own roots with the Zotos brand, which I love that brand.

My treatments

In radio we get opportunities all the time to do endorsement type things, so I do commercials for a place called New U Women’s Clinic & Aesthetics here in Washington. They asked me to do a procedure in 2018 called AquaGold microchannel microinjector. They take your platelets from your own blood, and then put filler and Botox in there too. They pressed it all over my skin. And I swear from the time that they did that, I noticed a difference in my skin texture. I totally trust Dr. Rachel Fidino, so she’ll poke me here and there lightly and I’m okay. I do Botox twice a year especially for the furrows between my eyebrows. You’re sitting there going, “Why am I doing this and hurting my face and I’m poking myself?” But then about four days later you’re like, “Yes, I love this.”
