Lindsey Vonn is a legend of the downhill skiing world.

At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, the Minnesotan skier took home the gold in the women’s downhill division, in addition to numerous other accolades.

But now, retired from competitive skiing, Vonn has found a new passion: surfing. Well, surfing-adjacent sports, to be clear. Like electric hydrofoil surfing, in which she wiped out recently, against doctor’s orders following knee surgery. And wake surfing, in which even more recently, she suffered a jellyfish sting to the bum; see below:

Captioning the post, Vonn wrote:

“What started off as a great day ended in a giant jellyfish sting/bite…I literally rode over it as I was getting up on the wake surf board 🤦🏼‍♀️ thanks to everyone who gave advice on remedies. Think it’s gonna leave a mark for a while … 🤕 at least I caught some waves before!”

The old wives’ tale remedy for jellyfish stings is to pee on it. Everybody knows that. It could be something about the temperature or the pH levels…who knows.

For more of a scientific explanation, here’s what to do via the Mayo Clinic:

Most jellyfish stings can be treated as follows:

  1. Carefully pluck visible tentacles with a fine tweezers.

  1. Soak the skin in hot water. Use water that's 110 to 113 F (43 to 45 C). It should feel hot, not scalding. Keep the affected skin immersed or in a hot shower until the pain eases, which might be 20 to 45 minutes.

  1. Apply 0.5% to 1% hydrocortisone cream or ointment twice a day to the affected skin.
