If you’re remotely familiar with South Korea’s contributions to pop or rock music, there’s a good chance that the seven-member group Dreamcatcher has been on your radar for quite some time. In fact, as they continue to actively dominate the rock-inspired side of the genre, their hardened sound has only helped their career evolve through album sales and the group’s first domestic music awards show win last year. Now, with a well-deserved Dreamcatcher Renaissance on the horizon, we’ve made it a little easier to familiarize yourself with their expansive history and each of the incredible women attached to this dark horse of a pop group.

The Inception of Dreamcatcher

Despite being known as Dreamcatcher for several years now, the group received a much tamer debut sound under the name of MINX that was promoted from 2014-2016. By the time the five-member group’s company opted to pursue a drastically different route to rebrand as Dreamcatcher, they added two new members to the MINX roster and completely reshaped the group’s identity to incorporate a much edgier alternative to the heavily-saturated bubblegum pop music that K-pop fans were accustomed to.

The Group’s Hybrid Pop-Rock Sound

When Dreamcatcher rose from the ashes of MINX in early 2017, the group finally felt like it had fulfilled its destiny as an “anti-mainstream pop group” heavily influenced by both rock and metal. Embracing their natural transition into a less-predictable sound, they then dedicated the next five years to maintaining their status as one of the most recognizable rock groups in Korea. And with hits like “MAISON,” “BEcause,” “Scream,” and “PIRI” in their arsenal, Dreamcatcher is finally getting the worldwide attention they deserve. Without further ado, here are the women behind Dreamcatcher.

The Members

JiU (29)

JiU acts as the optimistic leader of Dreamcatcher, and when taking on that title for a group as chaotically unpredictable as this one, you’re going to have your work cut out for you. Fortunately, JiU is all smiles and isn’t afraid to take (light) shots from her members. It’s also consistently heartwarming to see how much love JiU has not only for her members but for the group in general, taking great pride in the work they’ve accomplished together over the years. We love a passionate and respectable leader!

SuA (28)

It’s been scientifically proven that it’s impossible to dislike Dreamcatcher’s most experienced member, SuA. Why? Well, for starters, she’s an outspoken versatile performer who happens to also be hilarious. Plus, when you have a Leo in the mix, loyalty is all but guaranteed, which likely contributes to her role as the quirky, clingy sibling of the pop/rock group. There’s also her instinctive ability to adapt to choreography, so every group would be lucky to have a SuA waiting in the wings.

Siyeon (27)

If anyone in the group was destined to become a crucial component of Dreamcatcher’s rock influence, it was Siyeon, who loves the grittier sides of music. During her high school years, the K-pop main vocalist took her unwavering love for the metal/rock genres and channeled it into her own band before eventually joining the company where she’d spend the next four years training for the MINX-to-Dreamcatcher launch. And those tranquil, polished vocals she’s now capable of? Yeah, Siyeon crushes it every time.

Handong (27)

Dreamcatcher’s visual queen Handong has some of the most relatable qualities among the group’s members, primarily because of her subservience to cats (we stan Nannan), and partially because of her interest in cheffing up tasty desserts. Two very important details, honestly. Outside of Dreamcatcher, the well-trained bilingual singer has also launched a separate career as a soloist in China, so she probably doesn’t have any spare time for new hobbies. Queen Handong continues to thrive!

Yoohyeon (26)

First and foremost, Korean artist Yoohyeon is well-versed in linguistics (with a basic understanding of English, Mandarin, and German), which is more than most people can say for themselves. When you plug those attributes into her career as a musician, you can see the the influence across the group’s Japanese releases like “PIRI,” or even throughout her various English covers of songs including the utter slayage of “Touch” by Little Mix.

Dami (26)

Dami totally radiates K-pop “it girl” energy. She’s known for bringing major charm to performances, has studied Kendo, is very protective of her fellow Dreamcatcher members, and has an appreciation for anime. Dami’s raspier tones are apparent cross the group’s discography, but especially during her high-energy self-produced solo performance of “Beauty Full” which dropped just last year.

Gahyeon (24)

With plenty of training experience from companies like FNC (P1Harmony) and YG (Blackpink), Dreamcatcher’s Gahyeon eventually landed a spot in the rock-heavy group through their MINX dissolution and sonic reinvention. Artistically speaking, the youngest member of Dreamcatcher has also contributed to various positions within the group, including a spot as a lead rapper and a recurring space for unexpected sugary sweet vocals. However, highly recommend that you don’t mistake her for being cute, because according to the singer, she’s officially upgraded to being “cool.”
