It's going to cost you more to fly, especially out of Philly. Is Delaware a better choice?

Hopping on a plane for a family getaway or important business trip has never been a wallet-friendly proposition. But your next flight out of the Philadelphia area is likely to bang up your budget even more, according to a new report that examined the rising cost of airfare.

Data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows flying is more expensive, with Philadelphia International Airport delivering the fifth-largest percentage spike.

The Indianapolis Star reported a recent study looking at domestic flights at 72 major airports found the average price of a plane ticket increased in 2023 by 16% — from $328 in the first quarter of last year to roughly $382, according to SmartAsset.

Two Florida airports led the pack in percentage increases, followed by Gerald R. Ford International in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Cleveland-Hopkins International.

How expensive is it to fly out of Philadelphia?

Flights out of PHL jumped from $334.34 to $406.34, a 21.53% climb.

Philadelphia International Airport's 20 passenger airlines carried more than 13 million flyers through the first six months of the year, according to its website. Its airlines service more than 120 destinations around the world, with an average of 13 flights leaving each hour.

Prices at Miami International Airport took off by 31%, according to the data, reaching an average of $368 in the first quarter of this year.

A 26% increase in ticket costs put Southwest Florida International Airport in the second spot. Tickets there averaged $368 in the first quarter.

Grand Rapids saw flights go up 22.52%, from $349.29 to $427.97; Cleveland's flights jumped 21.55%, from $286.97 to $348.82.

JFK International is more expensive than Philly, with an average ticket costing $424, but it was No. 6 on the list for percentage increases at 21.29%. Newark International Airport or LaGuardia — $400 and $325, respectively — offer cheaper average flights than Philly and JFK.

Is it cheaper to fly out of Delaware?

The First State's lone carrier offers tickets averaging $140.85, up from $115.27 in the first quarter of 2022. New Castle Airport's 22.19% increase in fares could be tied to Avelo Airlines taking over flights there earlier this year. The airline is the lone carrier; it replaced Frontier, which left the airport in 2022.

Later this year, Avelo will start flying to Sarasota, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. With destinations in Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee, the low-cost carrier will service 15 cities starting in November.

How much does it cost to fly out of Atlantic City?

Listed at 131 in domestic passenger totals, the Atlantic City International Airport didn't make SmartAsset's list.

But, Bureau of Transportation Statistics data shows ticket costs out of ACY grew 23.71% from the first quarter of 2022 to the first quarter of 2023, outpacing the increase at Philadelphia.

The difference, of course, is the actual airfare. Flights out of Atlantic City went up from $138.33 on average, to $171.13.

Spirit Airlines, the airport's largest carrier, often offers ticket-price deals totaling just a few Andrew Jacksons.

So, should I fly out of Trenton-Mercer?

Fare hikes hit Trenton-Mercer Airport travelers even harder, boosting ticket prices 29.09%. But, it's still a bargain, with ticket prices on Frontier, the airport's only passenger carrier, averaging $149.69 in the first quarter of the year.

The airport, off I-295 in Ewing, Mercer County, is gearing up for a massive expansion. Approved last year by the Federal Aviation Administration, the county's plan would add a 125,000-square-foot terminal, grow the baggage claim area and boost the number of security lanes.

The FAA has said flights out of Trenton-Mercer could grow 51% — up from 316,665 to 476,507 — over the next decade.
