GoFundMe created a huge campaign to protect abortion rights—here's how to donate
Reproductive rights have been under constant threat the past several years, and so far, 2019 is no exception. This year, Alabama and Georgia passed laws that outlaw abortion before most people even know they’re pregnant. And on top of individual states’ restrictive legislation, the Trump administration has also made efforts to restrict federal funding for abortion providers. Thankfully, abortion rights advocates are continuing to defend reproductive rights, and now even GoFundMe is joining the fight.
Created on June 20th, the Fight Back: Protect Abortion Access campaign will benefit the National Network of Abortion Funds, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the ACLU Foundation, and the American Civil Liberties Union. The fund aims to raise $500,000 in donations. As of today, June 24th, it has received about $29,000.

On the campaign page, GoFundMe notes that donations will be used for the organizations’ general operations. This means that if you donate, your money will go toward funding legal challenges against abortion bans, programs that enable patients to seek the procedure, and advocacy work. GoFundMe’s new effort to protect reproductive rights is admirable, but it’s not the only way you can help. You can always donate to the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, or the National Network of Abortion Funds individually. Consider giving to local or regional groups as well. And as always, if you feel strongly about abortion rights, contact your elected officials. Everyone deserves to make decisions about their own bodies.
