Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire might be more like Lethal Weapon than anyone could have predicted.

According to the film’s director Adam Wingard, it subscribes to the ‘buddy cop’ genre, which includes films like Lethal Weapon, The Nice Guys, and Hot Fuzz.

“The buddy cop dysfunctional relationship dynamic is probably the best one to describe Godzilla and Kong,” Wingard tells Empire.

“Those films are always about, here’s a big threat, and you have to do all these things to pump yourself up so you can take care of that threat.”

Buddy cop movies are all about thrusting opposites together. If Kong is the weary, ‘too old for this’ Danny Glover character, Godzilla is the increasingly chaotic Mel Gibson.

That goes some way to explaining why Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is rated for “violence and action.”
