Glen Plake Celebrates Mammoth's Ski Patrollers On August 6th Closing Day

Mammoth Mountain, California just wrapped up one of the most historic seasons in North American history, and the ski patrollers are taking a much-deserved break.

Legendary professional skier Glen Plake was at Mammoth yesterday for one final day of skiing. Watch as he thanks the hard-working ski patrollers for their tireless efforts to keep the mountain open throughout what was a challenging season (to say the least):

Mammoth was open for 275 days of skiing between November 11th, 2022 and August 6th, 2023. The resort's Main Lodge recorded a record-breaking 700+ inches of snow throughout the season, and the summit picked up well over 900 inches.

What a season it was.

Unfortunately for ski patrol, record-breaking snowfall meant record-breaking hours worked, and explosives discharged.

According to Plake, Mammoth Mountain's Ski Patrol used 9,000 hand charges and over 1,000 artillery rounds to mitigate avalanches throughout the season.

Just to clarify- that's A LOT of explosives to detonate in one season.

Mammoth is officially closed for skiing and snowboarding, and while that's sad for those of us that wanted the resort to remain open throughout the summer, they're less than 100 days away from the start of next season.

No, I'm not joking. Click here to see how Mammoth flexed on every other ski resort in the country late last week.

I'd like to take this opportunity to personally thank every employee at Mammoth Mountain for making this season happen.

I was fortunate enough to ski Mammoth in January and June this season. My experiences simply wouldn't have been possible without the blood, sweat, and tears shed by thousands of employees both on and off the resort.

Thanks for a wonderful Winter '22-'23, Mammoth Mountain. Here's hoping next season is even better.
