'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery' Cast Revealed

·8 min read

And then there were more! The highly anticipated sequel to 2019's murder-mystery smash Knives Out started filming last week in Greece—and although production is already underway, the movie still seems to be adding additional stars to the cast.

The original film, which made over $300 million worldwide, thrilled viewers and critics alike, in no small part because of its super-impressive roster of A-list actors like Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Don Johnson, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette, Keith Stanfield, Ana de Armas and Jamie Lee Curtis. It was no wonder, then, that writer/director Rian Johnson started talking about a sequel almost immediately, with excitement for the new film building almost as quickly as the cast list.

The only possible downside? Craig, who played Detective Benoit Blanc, is the lone actor reportedly returning from the first Knives Out. (No more Chris Evans in a chunky sweater? Noooo!) But to make up for it, the eclectic mix of stars who've signed on to join Craig for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (aka Knives Out 2) is a murderers' row (pun intended) of Hollywood talent.

Keep reading to find out all about the many, many famous faces you'll be seeing when Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery finally arrives.

Who is in the  Knives Out 2 cast?

A diverse and surprising array of actors and actresses is set for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. The cast seems to be even bigger than that for the first film, and it’s not yet certain how all of their characters will tie together.

Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig was the first actor aboard Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Reprising his role as eccentric Benoit Blanc presumably means he'll be solving at least one murder case. Last year, Craig expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating again with Johnson after Knives Out's runaway success. “I’d do anything for Rian. If he writes something, I’ll do it. Of course, I will,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

Janelle Monáe

The “Turntables” singer is no stranger to films, having starred in Antebellum, Moonlight and Hidden Figures. Her presence in the new Knives Out was announced in May 2021, and while Netflix (which is producing Knives Out 2) wouldn't comment on her casting, Janelle Monáe confirmed in a tweet that she'd be, let's say, taking a stab at one of the sequel's characters.

Kathryn Hahn

Fresh off her scene-stealing role in Marvel’s WandaVision, Kathryn Hahn confirmed at the 2021 MTV Movie & TV Awards that she'd be in Knives Out 2. "I met with [Johnson] a couple times over Zoom and I loved [the original KnivesOut]," she said about how she was in talks for a role. "I love Daniel Craig, I'm a huge fan, so yeah, I'm very excited."

Kate Hudson jumped aboard Knives Out 2 in early 2021. The film reunites her with Hahn, who played her character's friend in the 2003 rom-com How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

Hudson was so happy to see her pal again that in June 2021, she posted a pic of them with their partners on Instagram. “Reunited baby yeah!” she captioned the photo. “Love and missed my bestie.”

Best known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Dave Bautista has shared that he’s a bundle of nerves about working on Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. “It feels terrifying. I’m nervous about it. I’m really nervous,”Bautista told SlashFilm in May 2021. “I want to deliver. I take pride in that. I’m a game player. I want to throw a touchdown pass.”

Ethan Hawke

Ethan Hawke shocked movie fans when he turned up on the Knives Out 2 set in Greece in June 2021. He was not even rumored to be appearing in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery until he was captured in on-set photos by The Daily Mail, aiming a water pistol at Bautista’s mouth. There’s some speculation that he could be the murder victim in the new film.

I’m going to show up and take notes, and learn all I can,”he said earlier this year about joining the cast.

Odom has worked with Monáe and Hudson before, while he and Hahn voice husband-and-wife characters on the Apple TV+ animated show Central Park. ”The most shared space we’ve had together will be on the set of Knives Out 2, strangely enough, even though we play husband and wife [on the show],” Odom has said about Hahn.

When did filming start on Knives Out 2?

Johnson tweeted a gorgeous photo from Greece on June 28, 2021, announcing that filming had officially begun there. “Thanks to all the lovely patient people here in Greece for letting us do all this murdering on their peaceful shores,” he wrote.

Why is Knives Out 2 filming in Greece?

No one but the crew seems to know why Knives Out 2 is being shot in Greece, but sources report that the cast worked throughout summer 2021 in the gorgeous resort town of Porto Heli and the island of Spetses.

What is Knives Out 2 about?

Right now, everyone involved is tight-lipped about what the plot of the Knives Out sequel could be. However, Johnson has expressed interest in doing something fresh and new with the murder mystery format. “It’s just what Agatha Christie did,” Johnson told Vanity Fair. "It’s just coming up with a whole new mystery, a whole new location, all-new cast, whole new mechanics of the appeal of a mystery and everything. It’d be a blast.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will focus on a murder mystery—of course—with a whole new cast of characters on a cruise in Greece, as well as on an island in the country.

Is Knives Out 2 the actual title of the film?

Mysteriously, when Johnson tweeted about filming, he referred to the production as “the next Benoit Blanc mystery,” not Knives Out 2. We now know the official title is Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

When will Knives Out 2 be released?

In March 2021, news broke that Netflix would be distributing the Knives Out sequel, not Lionsgate, which distributed the first movie. In a shocking $469 million dollar deal with Johnson, the streaming service got the rights to Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and will release it late in 2022.

Is there a Knives Out 2 trailer?

A teaser trailer for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery dropped on Sept. 8, 2022. In it, we see Detective Benoit Blanc take a group of new individuals to an island on a cruise to determine which of them is a murderer. What we don't know so far: Who got killed and how the group is connected.

Will there be more Knives Out films?

Netflix has already secured the rights to a third Knives Out flick. As part of the streamer's deal with Johnson, the third film will also star Craig and should receive the same budget as the first two films.
