"Glass Onion" Was Filmed at This Luxury Resort in Greece

The Massachusetts mansion in Knives Out made for an unforgettable murder mystery setting. In the follow-up to the whodunit titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, meanwhile, we’re whisked away to villas on a Greek island. The vacation-based tale will surely satisfy anyone who’s desperate for another season of The White Lotus. And luckily, you can also visit the vital locations in the film.

“Trading the browns of New England for the blue and yellows of Greece” was a deliberate move meant to separate the sequel from its predecessor, according to writer-director-producer Rian Johnson. “As much as there’s a rich tradition of murder mysteries in cozy English, or in our case New English countryside houses, there’s very much a rich vein of tradition of destination murders,” Johnson said in a global press conference.

Amanzoe

In a new adventure for Benoit Blanc (played by Daniel Craig), the detective finds himself peeling back the layers of a murder mystery at a billionaire’s private estate on a Greek island. That estate is played by the Amanzoe, a luxury resort and hotel near Porto Heli, Greece. “It wasn't an island,” production designer Rick Heinrichs told Condé Nast Traveler. “It was in the middle of the Peloponnesian peninsula, which would require us to depend on visual effects to make it look like one.”

The resort is comprised of cabanas, pavilions, and villas that have private pools with breathtaking views of olive groves and the Aegean sea. “So there's different views from each villa, and they lead up to the [Glass Onion] with the best view on top,” Heinrichs added. “It’s very epic, almost like the Colosseum, to approach the villa—which lends itself to the idea that people are about to kill each other.”

Spetses, Greece

“We were also not too far from the island of Spetses, where we did shoot as well,” Heinrichs told the publication. “When they all arrive in Greece and are waiting for the yacht, that’s Spetses.”

Not too far from Athens, Spetses makes an excellent location for a weekend getaway. While on the island, you can expect to travel by horse-drawn carriages, bike, or on foot. You can stroll along the island’s Old Harbour, explore boatyards, visit the Bouboulina Museum, and wander secluded beaches. Plus, the island is riddled with impressive homes, swanky shops, and gourmet dining options.

Belgrade, Serbia

Many of the interior scenes were built on stage in Belgrade, Serbia, including the interiors of the Glass Onion atrium along with anything set in New York or the Northeast. “There was some outdoor stuff for which we shot a few things on location last fall in Connecticut and New York, and then everything inside was built in Serbia,” Heinrichs told the outlet.

As the capital of Serbia, Belgrade is certainly worth a visit—especially for history buffs who want to check out the landmark Beogradska Tvrđava, a fortress at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers. Not only that, but there's plenty of shopping, museums, architecture, nightlife, and parks to embrace.
