'Girlfriends,' 'Sister, Sister,' and More Classic Black Sitcoms Are Coming to Netflix

  • Netflix has acquired the streaming rights to seven beloved Black sitcoms including, Girlfriends, Sister, Sister, and Moesha.

  • It reportedly took months for the streaming giant to obtain all the rights.

Our Netflix queues are about to receive a major dose of nostalgia.

Today, Netflix's Strong Black Lead Twitter account revealed that seven iconic, influential Black sitcoms stemming from the late 1990s and early 2000s are heading to the streaming platform: Girlfriends, Sister, Sister, Moesha, The Game, The Parkers, Half & Half, and One on One will all be available to stream very soon (dates below). The announcement follows Netflix's recent acquirement of classic Black films such as Love & Basketball, B*A*P*S, and Love Jones.

Netflix unveiled the news with a video featuring multiple actors from the selected shows, including Tracee Ellis Ross, Tia and Tamera Mowry, Jill Marie Jones, and Jackée Harry. In the clip, all the actors acknowledged and thanked the fans who tirelessly asked for their respective sitcoms to be acquired by the streaming service.

Netflix's Jasmyn Lawson, who spearheads the Strong Black Lead platform, also joined in on the Twitter celebration once the news was announced. In the midst of ecstatic retweets and celebratory GIFs, Lawson shared that bringing this selection of renowned Black sitcoms to Netflix was months in the making.

"SERIOUSLY THE BEST WORK OF MY LIFE! We've been working through the logistics to bring these shows to the platform for a very long time. And we've been working on the launch plan for months," wrote Lawson on Twitter. "I can't believe the news is finally out."

The upcoming Netflix additions will arrive to the streaming platform gradually over the next few months. Check out the dates below.

  • The Game Seasons 1-3: August 15

  • Sister Sister: September 1

  • Girlfriends: September 11
