Was Gigi Hadid's armpit hair real?

We’ve never seen Gigi Hadid with a hair out of place … until yesterday. Or so it seemed.

The model’s armpits turned the fashion world upside down when her video for Love Magazine’s advent calendar debuted. In the clip, she shows off her kickboxing and volleyball skills in a red sports bra and matching biker shorts from her Tommy Hilfiger collection. Toward the end of the action-packed video, she strikes a few poses stretching her arms over her head, and it’s hard not to notice the dark fuzz in her underarm region.

It was Day 11 of the calendar, which is known annually for the sexy celeb-filled videos, and Love Magazine posted Gigi’s video on their Instagram. At first, people were freaking out at the thought of a Hadid girl baring hairy armpits. “I love seeing everyone else’s videos. It’s celebratory of epic human beings and always pushes boundaries,” Gigi said of the project. And while body hair is losing its stigma thanks to celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Paris Jackson, this was definitely boundary pushing — if it was, in fact, armpit hair. Which, we’re now learning, it might not have been.

That’s right. People spent so much time and energy freaking out about #GigiHadidArmpitHairGate (we just made that up), and it might have all been for nothing.

TMZ reported yesterday that it was not even armpit hair! “Sources close to Gigi tell us her ‘armpit hair’ — which was prominently featured in Day 11 of LOVE Magazines Advent calendar video series — was, in fact, residue left behind from the jacket she was wearing on set,” the celebrity news source claimed. “We’re told the culprit was simply that navy cropped coat Gigi is seen wearing in the vid — ya know, the one in which she’s striking poses and kinda working up a sweat.” We’ve totally been there before, but that’s more a sock thing in our experience.

According to Vogue, makeup artist Hung Vanngo, who did Gigi’s makeup for the shoot, posted a comment saying that the armpit fuzz was from “the sweat and dust” on set, but he has since removed that comment.

Her pal Cara Delevingne loved the look, sharing it on her own Instagram with the caption, “YES GIGI!!! Loving the hair.” Of course, she could have been referring to Gigi’s wet hairstyle.

And while it’s not worth splitting hairs over — do whatever you want with your armpit hair — it sparked an interesting debate. See below for highlights from this massive moment brought on by a little fuzz.

And we’ll just leave you with this totally unrelated yet fitting tweet:
