Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik's Relationship Through the Years

There's nothing like a classic on-again-off-again relationship to keep the passion (and the Internet's interest) constantly fueled—especially when it comes in the form of two very notable and very hot celebrities. Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid's romance first sprouted into the public domain back in 2015, and since has fluctuated between breakups, reunions, Met Gala appearances, and many street style moments. Read on for a full timeline of their relationship.

November 2015: They get together.

A report from Us Weekly links the two young celebs as an item after they both ended their own respective relationships: Hadid from Joe Jonas and Malik from Perrie Edwards.

"It's a very new thing. They're just seeing where it goes," an insider told Us.

"I wouldn't call them boyfriend and girlfriend," a different source elaborated. "But seeing each other? Definitely. He's chuffed."

They later confirmed the dating rumors to be true when they were photographed holding hands.

A year later, Malik would divulge to the Evening Standard the story of how they met. Recognizing Hadid at a Victoria's Secret party, he asked her out. They subsequently went on their first date at a New York City restaurant in The Bowery Hotel.

"It were really nice," he told the outlet. "She's a very intelligent woman. She knows how to carry herself. She's quite classy and that. She's not, like, arrogant in any way, she's confident. She carries it well. She's cool."

December 2015: Zayn makes it Instagram official.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Malik posted a black-and-white Polaroid of Hadid holding him, marking the couple's social media debut.

January 2016: Gigi posts Zayn to her Instagram, Zayn says they're "good friends," and Gigi appears in Zayn's music video.

It's a big month for the couple.

The model returned her beau's social media affection by posting a sweet black-and-white snap of Malik holding her cat to her own account.

However, that same month, Malik dodged the dating rumors during an interview with Zane Lowe. "We're good friends," he said.

Then, by January 28, Malik's music video for "Pillow Talk" had dropped, and none other than his good pal Hadid was starring as his sultry love interest. The couple openly flirted on Twitter after the release.

February 2016: The relationship is confirmed.

During an interview with Zach Sang & The Gang, Malik all but confirms his relationship with the supermodel. And, for Valentine's Day, Hadid posted another photo of Malik with her cat (this time around, she didn't cut his face off).

April 2016: They do their first photo shoot together as a couple.

The two romped through the streets of Naples, Italy, for a feature shoot with Vogue.

May 2016: They make their red-carpet debut.

For the 2016 Met Gala, whose theme was Fashion in an Age of Technology, Malik and Hadid made a robotic appearance. He wore Versace, while she wore Tommy Hilfiger.

June 2016: Gigi shuts down breakup rumors, as signs of trouble in paradise begin to emerge.

E! reported that the couple had broken up, with an insider saying, "During her birthday they were fighting," and that they have "broken up and got back together a few times."

Another source added, "Zayn and Gigi did break up, but they can likely get back together tomorrow. It's all very unclear what's going on between them now. They been having some issues lately that involved communication and getting along."

Speaking with ELLE, Hadid confirmed that their relationship was very much still going strong, despite the reports. When asked whether or not she prefers a night in or a night out, Hadid said she likes a night in, specifically when it involves "hang[ing] out with my boyfriend."

On Snapchat, she also posted a photo of her snack counter, featuring designated Nutella jars marked with her name and Malik's name.

September 2016: They head to London Fashion Week.

Hadid and Malik sat front row together at the Versus Versace show, where they showed off some hand-holding PDA.

The couple also seemed to go on holiday together, judging from this beach selfie Hadid posted to her Instagram.

October 2016: They appear at Paris Fashion Week.

The couple continue their haute couture streak by attending the Givenchy show during Paris Fashion Week together.

December 2016: Zayn speaks more openly about Gigi during an interview.

Talking with SiriusXM Hits1, Malik opened up more about his relationship with the supermodel.

January 2017: Engagement rumors emerge.

After Hadid is photographed wearing a ring on her ring finger, fans went wild with speculation about a proposal from Malik. The rumors turned out to be just that—rumors.

In an interview with British Vogue, Hadid talked about what a typical night looks like for the couple. "When I'm in LA I mostly stay in because it's my time off and I like being with my boyfriend and doing art and cooking," she said. "We like late-night movies and we order from this amazing place that does lattes and gingerbread cookies. I need coffee to stay up. I'm always like, 'Babe, let's go to a movie.' Then I fall asleep halfway through and he's like, 'You've seen the first half of every movie out there and you have no idea how any of them end.'"

April 2017: They have a casual street style moment.

Hadid and Malik color-coordinated some olive-green tones into their outfits while briefly stepping out in New York City.

August 2017: Yolanda Hadid posts the couple on her Instagram.

Mom Yolanda Hadid shared an intimate snap of the couple embracing to her social media account, captioning it, "❤️Summer Loving....... #Family."

They also celebrated Eid Mubarak together.

October 2017: They coordinate Halloween costumes.

On Instagram, Hadid showed off their superhero-themed costumes in a cute snap.

January 2018: Gigi and Zayn go full Matrix in this bold street style look.

The couple both wore bold black trench coats and circle shades while stepping out of Hadid's New York City apartment.

March 2018: They break up.

The Sun reported that the two split due to hectic work schedules.

Afterward, the pair confirmed the breakup via Twitter.

Malik wrote, "Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend. She has such an incredible soul. I'm grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all. xZ"

In her own Twitter message, Hadid wrote, "Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years .. not only in the relationship, but in life in general. I'm forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever's meant to be will always be. xG"

April 2018: They're spotted kissing.

TMZ published a report claiming that the two were spotted kissing in New York City, fueling rumors of reconciliation.

May 2018: Zayn reportedly wants an official reunion, but Gigi is reluctant.

According to a source at E! News, "Zayn really wants to be with [Gigi] and has made it clear. He misses her and can't stand being apart. ... Gigi's a little bit more hesitant."

The insider added that they "broke up because it wasn't working and nothing has really changed." The source also indicated the couple's work schedules were hard to work around, saying, "They are both so busy with their careers and traveling the world. It makes it very difficult to be in a relationship."

Still, Hadid "does love him, but she isn't completely sure this is where she wants to be right now."

June 2018: Zayn and Gigi aren't putting any labels on their relationship.

Speaking with GQ, Malik is matter-of-fact about his relationship status with Hadid. "We're adults. We don't need to put a label on it, make it something for people's expectations," he said, adding that the model helped ground him back to reality after the release of his first solo album. "I had a very negative outlook on things. That might have been adolescence or testosterone or whatever the fuck was running through my body at the time. She's helped me to look at things from a positive angle."

July 2018: Gigi shuts down rumors about their "PR relationship."

A now-private Instagram account criticized Malik for not following Hadid on Instagram, suggesting that their relationship was nothing but a PR stunt. Hadid commented back.

October 2018: Things seem to be official again.

Hadid essentially confirms Malik as her boyfriend (again) by posting a selfie of her and the singer, captioning it, "Flyin home to my happy place."

January 2019: They break up (again).

While ringing in the New Year, multiple outlets reported that Hadid and Malik were donezo.

"Both been really focused on themselves and their separate careers," a source said for E!.

A source for ET elaborated, "Gigi and Zayn have broken up, but not because they don't love one another. After trying for a long time, the couple just couldn’t make it work. Zayn has been dealing with personal things for a while and Gigi has become a comfort blanket for him."

August 2019: Gigi seemingly moves on with Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron.

Hadid appears to officially move on from her relationship with Malik by dating Tyler Cameron, a former contestant on The Bachelorette.

Reports of the speculated romance first appeared in August. Afterward, they also allegedly went on a trip together, had dinner with Serena Williams, and flaunted some PDA at the VMAs after-party.

By October, however, the fling was over.

November 2019: Zayn and Gigi begin talking to each other again.

According to an E! source, Hadid "has always had a soft spot for Zayn and they have a lot of history together."

They added, "They went through a phase where they took time apart and weren't communicating at all, but they have been in touch recently. She is supportive of him. They chat here and there but it's been casual."

December 2019: Gigi shouts-out Zayn's mom.

Hadid tagged Malik's mom in her Instagram Story after preparing one of her recipes. Fans began to speculate that a reconciliation was on its way.

January 2020: They're photographed hanging out together.

The two stepped out with Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa. As the latter duo walked ahead of them, Gigi and Malik strolled behind while linking arms, leading fans to think that they were back on.

February 2020: Gigi confirms their relationship with a Valentine's Day post.

On Instagram, Hadid posted a snap of Malik visiting her family farm in Pennsylvania. She wrote in the caption, "HEY VALENTINE Z on the farm ♡ Dec 2019."

Later that month, Hadid also defended Malik from YouTuber Jake Paul in what would surely become one of the most iconic celebrity Twitter takedowns in history.

In a now-deleted tweet, the vlogger mocked Malik, even spelling his name wrong.

Hadid was quick to fire a shot back, calling Paul and his friends an "embarrassing crew of YouTube groupies."

April 2020: They're reportedly expecting a child together.

Shortly after Hadid spent her birthday with Malik and family, TMZ broke the news that the couple are expecting a child together. "Family sources" for the model told the outlet that Hadid is 20 weeks along, but she has not yet publicly confirmed the news.

September 2020: They welcome a baby girl.

The couple confirmed the arrival of their first child in affectionate social media posts.

"Our baby girl is here, healthy & beautiful," Malik captioned a black-and-white photo of his hand holding onto his daughter's. "To try put into words how I am feeling right now would be an impossible task. The love I feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding.Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine, & thankful for the life we will have together x."

Hadid shared a similar photo on Instagram, writing, "Our girl joined us earth-side this weekend and she’s already changed our world. So in love🥺💕."
