It’s 10:00 p.m. on the final day of New York Fashion Week, and although the heavens are opening over Milk Studios’s penthouse, everyone—from Tiffany Haddish to models Irina Shayk, Jasmine Tookes, and Jordan Barrett—is buzzing.

Gigi Hadid enters straight off the runway. “I’m so sorry I’m late,” she says, “I came from Fenty.” Late she may be but not a hair is amiss as she slips through the crowd—which includes her supportive father, Mohamed, beaming with pride—clad in a skintight, diamante-covered jumpsuit. By her side is Valérie Messika, daughter of diamond merchant André Messika, dressed in a slinky leopard-print dress. The two met during their first collaboration and hit it off right away.

“We both love delicate jewelry but want to be able to wear it every day,” Hadid explains. The jewelry in their collection “is still fine jewelry, but it’s durable.” Her favorite pieces to wear are the earrings: “You can mix and match them and wear [them] with jeans and a T-shirt to make your outfit more glam.”

The space is getting steadily more crowded, but Hadid’s relaxed, down-to-earth personality shines through. “I’m super-inspired by jewelry I see worn by people walking down the street. I love when people have stories behind their jewelry. It doesn’t have to be expensive, it might even have been passed down through the family.” One doesn’t have to know Hadid well to know that she’s a family girl.

“If I was going to give Bella a piece from the collection, it would be the hand chain, which is inspired by henna—I just love it. And I’d give my dad an anklet!”
