Long bobs and dad lobs are all the rage these days, but the origin of the hairstyle is close-cropped and blunt. And that's the retro style model Gigi Hadid is rocking in her latest Miu Miu campaign.
In the pictures, photographed by Steven Meisel, Hadid carries the Wander and Arcadie bags. Her soft makeup gives her an all-American look, and her pinned waves are so 1930s—and that reference is intentional.
Per Miu Miu's press release, the campaign draws inspiration “from the stylized work of the pioneering British interwar photographer Yevonde. A feminist and suffragette, Yevonde’s career emblematizes freedom and independence…. Yevonde’s work of the 1930s is groundbreaking for its use of delicately nuanced and considered color, creating surreally perfect arrangements of models and high-society elites within utopian scopes of unreal props, drapery, and foliage.”
It's a new look for Hadid, the ultra-modern model, but it works. “GORGEOUS,” wrote her mother, Yolanda Hadid, on Hadid's post of the pictures. Kylie Jenner added the same comment but in lower case.
It's a little Kit Kittredge, no? Talk about a doll face!
Or maybe Daisy Buchanan…
Could be a good Halloween costume, Gi!
Hadid chopped her long blonde hair off at the beginning of March, capturing the process in a video she shared online. She smoothed it into a “flicked bob” a week later and cemented the style as the It cut for this spring. Or the skinny lob, if that works better for your head shape.
Gigi Hadid is not the only one embracing a retro hairstyle lately. A number of celebs have been sporting long, thick, and fluffy “Bardot bangs,” named after the French actor and sex symbol of the 1960s Brigitte Bardot, and Selena Gomez just stepped out with her dark locks styled into a luxurious blowout that's so Mad Men. Are we all about to start teasing our hair up into beehives and ratting it out, Jackie O–style? Is it time to rewatch Hairspray?
Meanwhile, elsewhere in Hadid's life, she continues to have a seen-not-heard relationship with Bradley Cooper, which neither of them is talking about, but the photo evidence is plentiful. They're brunching, they're smooching, they're not walking red carpets, but wouldn't it be so perfect to hard launch at the Met Gala? Just a suggestion.
