Gigi Hadid Directed the New Joe Jonas Music Video, Starring The Fat Jew & Candice Huffine

Twenty years ago, supermodels starred in music videos. Now they’re directing them. Joe Jonas just released a brand new video, the first from his new band, DNCE. The single’s called “Cake by the Ocean” and literally stars a piece of cake, by the ocean.

In the video, the four-piece LA-based band, plays the dance-y jam on the beach while The Fat Jewish rubs frosting all over his bare body before taking on a bevy of models in an epic food fight full of more yellow cake and white frosting than most of these girls have collectively seen in a lifetime.

Jonas’s model girlfriend, Gigi Hadid, is credited as the first director (four dudes come after her on the ticker running across the bottom of the screen at the video’s start). It’s one thing for social media to propel an it-girl to a magazine cover or campaign gig, but Hadid’s the first of her crew to parlay her reality TV notoriety into another industry. Models Candice Huffine, Mara Teigen, Hunter McGrady, Tina Louise, and Sahara Ray jump into the food fight, too, but the most famous model attached to the project stays behind the camera.

As for the name of the song, Jonas blames his Swedish collaborators. “We were at the studio, and I overheard the producers saying that they wanted to get cake by the ocean,” he says. They were trying to say they wanted a Sex on the Beach cocktail. And that would’ve made one hell of a music video.
